Chief Minister Rekha Gupta acknowledges the Janakpuri mishap located in the western region of Delhi and has directed swift and precise action in the light of shoddy safety standards during digging and road work related activities in the city. As per the directions of the Chief Minister an Office Memorandum was issued by the Chief Secretary prescribing an eight point safety program for digging operations including road work in the area of jurisdiction of Delhi.
Efficient government step following the incident in Janakpuri
In connection to the sad occurrence that took place, the Chief Minister stated that there is zero tolerance for cases of public safety being compromised and for which people succumb because of sheer negligence. Accordingly, she insisted and called for the strict implementation of the safety of excavation facilities in Delhi pointing out that lapses will result in action against officers or the contractor.
The recent mandate in the form of an Office Memorandum provides a set of instructions aimed at focusing the efforts of everyone engaged in works such as repairing, maintenance, reconstruction and the like that also require excavation of roads, footpath and underground services across the city. The instructions go as far as to state that the concerned government departments needs to take immediate action and observe full compliance within a few days.
Levels of compliance with the eight-point safety directive
Based on a directive which is currently operational, the notice covers all ministries and sections under the Government of NCT. This includes the public works department, the irrigation and flood control department, Delhi Jal board, municipal corporations, the police, power companies, and all other users and contractors performing excavation in the roads area.
