Today’s degraded service has been widely reported by Claude users. There have been response errors and general slowdowns that have made their way through multiple services. On Downdetector one can see the sharp rise in complaints as the outage went beyond the main chatbot, which has given pause to the developers and teams that make use of Anthropic for their day to day work.
Reliability is something of a differentiator in an AI market this crowded. When you have a disruption of this sort it can bring coding or research to a standstill, not to mention content drafts. It puts the onus on vendors to put out the fire and get stability back in a hurry, all while being clear about what is happening.
What went wrong across Claude services
It was not just Claude.ai that was affected. User reports and posts on X indicate trouble with the Claude API, Claude for Workspaces (Cowork) and Claude Code. “All four were seeing degraded performance,” according to Alex Getman, a technology commentator.
On its status page Anthropic pointed to model-level errors. ‘We are investigating elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. We will provide an update soon,’ the company wrote.
User reports show wide reach
Downdetector had a lot of activity around midday on 24 August 2026, with the number of complaints topping 500. Users were having trouble loading up conversations and getting replies from both the app and the browser.
The figures did vary from one snapshot to the next. At one point Claude Chat was responsible for 51% of the complaints, followed by Claude Code at 27% and the app at 14%. An earlier read put the emphasis elsewhere: 41% for Claude Code, 31% for the chat and 19% for the app.
Then there were the less headline-grabbing issues like high latency and website errors, along with login woes. Some developers even flagged connectivity problems with the API that were mucking up in-progress builds and integrations.
Anthropic response and recovery
Anthropic has put the incident on record via its service status page, confirming engineers are on the case to restore normal operations after identifying the cause. There was no word on when a full recovery would be in place when the news first broke.
A subsequent update from the company said error rates for Opus 5 and Fable 5 have stabilised, though they are still working on the success rates for the rest of the models. As for the root cause, that was not disclosed; instead there was a warning that some hiccups could remain as they recover.
Why it matters for the AI race
When your AI tools are central to the writing, coding and research pipeline, an interruption is magnified. Downtime with Claude Code is apparent in minutes for a developer. For other teams, any snafu with the API or workplace tools can put deliverables behind schedule.
Key developments so far include:
– A peak of over 500 reports on Downdetector
– Anthropic says it has the cause identified
– Four versions of the model have been named as affected
– No timeline for a complete fix has been set
What users should do next
Rather than hammering the system with repeated requests during the recovery period, Anthropic suggests keeping an eye on the official status page. The company says fixes are underway but normalcy will only return once error rates are back to where they should be.
The message is plain for the businesses and developers who count on Claude for their daily routine: expect some instability for a while. This latest episode is a reminder of how vital uptime is to staying competitive, and how fast a glitch on an AI platform can make itself known in a modern workflow.
