In a way, her social media post for the death of her husband, the industrialist, was as much a nod to the succession drama as it was a remembrance. The feeling of it is palpable, even as relatives jostle for control of what he left behind.
A remembrance coloured by succession stakes
You can’t separate the man from the matter in court right now. The ongoing legal wrangling has put a spotlight on Kapur’s legacy in more ways than one. A 2025 will has been put to the test, and in response, the High Court has put a hold on his domestic holdings.
What Priya wrote
"A year without you,” she put it in her post. “Still the first thought in the morning and the last at night.”
The rest of the in memoriam is a paean to his spirit: “A year has passed since you left, yet your presence continues to guide us every single day. You never believed in standing still. You embraced life with energy, curiosity and conviction, and made those around you want to dream bigger and put in the work.”
She let the note end on this: “You remain deeply loved and forever remembered in the values you lived by, the lives you touched and the love you gave so generously. Your love remains our strength. Your memory remains our blessing.” It was put out in the name of Mrs. Rani Kapur and Mrs. Priya Kapur & Family.
Dispute over Rs 30,000 crore estate
Things have been at an impasse since Sunjay died. His wife, his mother Rani, and the children he had with Karisma Kapoor – Samaira and Kiaan – are all in the mix. They are at odds over a 2025 will that some say has its share of digital and textual problems.
It has made any kind of quiet, private deal off the table. Once the objections were made, the court froze the assets, and now the Class-I heirs, Samaira and Kiaan, are after their due portion of both movable and immovable property.
This is the upshot of the filings and the pushback we’ve seen from the family:
– Priya Kapur has put forward a 2025 will.
– Its veracity is being put to the test.
– The heirs say the asset list they were shown was not complete.
– The High Court has put a freeze on what is in the country.
How Sunjay Kapur died
He was 53 when he was found dead on a polo field in London on June 12, 2025. Some said it was a heart attack; others, anaphylactic shock. For a while, there were whispers of a transnational plot, according to his mother, Rani.
But in August, the British side put an end to the talk, ruling it a natural cause of death. It didn’t do much to lower the temperature on the inheritance front, though, which has been the story of his legacy ever since.
Personal ties and corporate legacy
As the head of Sona Comstar, Sunjay was a figure in the business world, and before that he was in a marriage with Karisma Kapoor. Most know him for the drive he put into his work and his sport, like the polo that was part of the backdrop to his untimely end.
He and Priya Sachdev were wed in 2017, a year after he and Karisma called it quits. They have a son, Azarias, and he also made a home for Safira Chatwal, Priya’s daughter from her time with Vikram Chatwal (they split in 2011).
Priya, a former model and the daughter of Ashok Sachdev, is no stranger to the limelight. An LSE graduate and a face in Yash Raj Films’ 2005 movie Neal ‘n’ Nikki, she comes from a long line of connections. And for the record, before Karisma and Priya, there was Nandita Mahtani.
What comes next
The tribute brings the loss back to the fore, but the law will have the last word. With the 2025 will being pored over and the assets where they are, it all comes down to validating the paperwork and a hard look at the inventory. That is how the legacy will be sorted in the end.
