You don’t have to head to a centre to do this anymore. As of 1 July 2026, UIDAI is allowing you to add or change an email right in the app at zero cost. The government has put out word that in just two days, more than 2.5 lakh residents have done so, which says something about how much they want a secure, at-home option.

What changed and why it matters

It’s a move away from the old way of things with the queues and forms. The Ministry of Electronics & IT has made it a point to offer this as a free service through the app alone, from 1 July 2026 for half a year, so you can keep your records in order without a physical visit.

The numbers back it up. By July 3, 2026, officials could confirm 2.5 lakh-plus updates. The quick response is a sign that folks are looking to plug any holes in their notifications and be sure of what’s happening with their identity.

Who should update email now

Make sure your email is tied to your Aadhaar if you want to be in the loop on important matters. UIDAI will send you a heads-up in real time whenever there’s an authentication request, which is a good way to see if anything is amiss.

Here are a few to think about while it’s on the house:
– Six months of no-fee updates on the app
– You get an alert for every time your Aadhaar is used
– No need to make a trip to an enrolment centre
– Easier to sort out any problems down the line

How the Aadhaar App is evolving

They’ve put the essential services in one place on your phone. It’s not just for emails; you can put in new mobile or address details too. The government notes some 40 lakh have updated their numbers and 10 lakh their addresses with the app.

UIDAI has made privacy a priority. You can share only what you have to, be it your name or age. There’s also QR verification, face ID, biometric lock, and a way to track your history of authentications.

One device can hold as many as five profiles, which is handy for families. This is the successor to the mAadhaar app we had earlier in the year, part of a wider effort to bring our digital tools up to speed for a Viksit Bharat.

Availability and what to do next

UIDAI is telling you to get the app and make use of the email feature. It’s on for Android and iOS, but the free ride is for a limited time, so you may as well get it done before you have to pay for it.

You can follow this simple process:
– Get the app (or the latest version of it)
– Go to the section for updating your email
– Follow the prompts to authenticate

It’s a no-brainer for those who want to know where they stand with their identity. With the uptake we’re seeing and the fact it’s free for a while, there’s no reason not to check your details and shore up your security.

All in all, it’s proof that these kinds of services are going mobile. Having it in an app means you don’t have to travel, and your information with the various services you use stays up to date.

For most, it’s an easy call: take advantage of the no-fee period and make sure you don’t miss a beat when your Aadhaar is in play. UIDAI’s stance is plain. Do it from the comfort of home and do it today.
