The film, formerly known as VD 14, is now officially Ranabaali. The title and a first look were shown on Republic Day, which made it clear this would be a big period action thriller, directed by Rahul Sankrityan. People who are fans now understand this film for all of India is based on the 1800s, and will get a wide release in cinemas.
Plot and setting
Ranabaali is set in the years 1854-1878 and uses real events from history. The first look shows a very bad scene: a country suffering from drought, and colonial control, where cruel officials are taking everything from people in the area. The story is about a brave man who turns into a ‘savage’ to defend his people and give them back their pride.
The short video shows Vijay Deverakonda as Ranabaali, looking strong and in charge. A particularly noticeable scene has him on a horse, pulling a British officer, to show how the film will be about conflict and what is at risk. The story will have both physical fighting and emotional resistance.
Cast, crew and release
Vijay and Rashmika are working together again, after having success with other films – Rashmika is playing Jayamma. Arnold Vosloo is Sir Theodore Hector, the person against the good guys, and adds an international feeling of danger to the fight in the past. Rahul Sankrityan is the director, and Ajay-Atul, a well-known pair, are doing the music, which suggests a big musical score to fit the size of the film.
Naga Vamsi, Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar are the producers. The project is another big collaboration for Vijay and his team, showing they often make ambitious, costly stories for people who speak many languages.
Ranabaali will be released in cinemas around the world on September 11, 2026. It will be in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam – meaning it is truly for all of India, and designed to get to many different types of viewers.
First glimpse and the director’s vision
The film makers put out the first look with a caption about taking back history. Vijay said the British called the main character a ‘SAVAGE’ and added, ‘He was OUR Savage,’ to show they want to bring back histories that were wiped out or forgotten, through making a film.
Rahul Sankrityan, who has done good work before mixing feelings with a stylish story, seems to be making a large historical film. The first look suggests big fight scenes, detail from the period, and a story of people fighting back.
Why Ranabaali matters
Ranabaali is one of the few Indian films of today to look at a period action thriller based on local history, and do so on a big scale. Being released in many languages will make it easier to get to, and Vijay and Rashmika have shown they can attract audiences.
Ajay-Atul’s music makes people expect good and memorable songs, which often help films for all of India to reach more people. The choice of an actor from another country as the bad guy suggests it will be liked in many countries, and that the film is clearly about good against the empire.
Things to look out for: how well the film mixes historical detail with exciting events, whether the main actor becomes a famous figure quickly, and how people react to a politically important story from the past.
Final thoughts
Ranabaali will likely be a strong mix of action, history and famous actors. With a definite release date and a dramatic first look, the film is looking like one of the most talked-about films of 2026. If you like Vijay Deverakonda, Rashmika Mandanna or large films from all over India based in the past, put September 11, 2026 in your diary.
