The Sonam Kapoor flick Border 2 has started on quite a good note as far as box office business is concerned for at least the very first week. After breaking and surpassing the Rs 300 crore mark, the film has had an uncertain second week, with massive weekday drops and the movie fast approaching its conclusion in theaters.
Box Office Collection Day 19 and recent daily trends
Coming to trade, Day 19 portrayed a stark slowdown. The first box office tracker estimates reveal the Day 19 India net collections came to around Rs 0.06 crore. That brings the cumulative India net collection to a little over Rs 311.66 crore.
This completion came on the back of Day 18, which was worrisome with single-day net collections of nearly Rs 1.85 crore. This was a very sharp fall from Day 17 and the lowest since the release until now. Occupancies have been dropping during weekday mornings and afternoons into low-single digits for many shows.
Week-wise performance and overall trajectory
Border2 performed well in the opening week, but the fall in collections was even higher and turned the second weekend almost into a debacle. The first week collections were around Rs 224.25 crore, driven by patriotic fervor, despite large star power. Then the second week showed way too erratic and massive dips around Rs 70.15 crore collections.
Going into Week 3, things kept falling and then almost ground to a halt with daily collections flirting with numbers as low as Rs 2 crores and the overall weekend number inching slightly above Rs 311 crore. It was pretty much a massive trend of a front-loaded blockbuster starting strong and tapering down with Clubhouse hurdles.
Why collections have fallen so low
Quite a few things have gone wrong and are still keeping the movie from reaching any higher. To begin with, audience exhaustion is a significant factor springing up as the film has already been running for a good three weeks. To add more distress to the 6 days of the week, shows on the weekdays are not as patronized as they would be on the weekend. Border 2 is feeling the squeeze acutely.
Run time is also an operational aspect, as theaters could not accommodate too many daily shows for a film that goes up to 199 minutes – which translates to 3 hours and 19 minutes. Long runtimes deter repeat viewings and lessen weekday fillers unless through particularly positive word of mouth or a festival traffic drive.
Censorship, changes, and specifications
The film was given a U/A certificate after the certification board made several adjustments to the film prior to its release. These changes included placing Sunny Deol’s full name in the credits, working with graphics to obscure certain aircraft flags and ship names, and renaming the warship as Kavach in certain sequences.
The board had recommended to the team for the duration of the soldiers and text info on the martial warriors on screen to be increased and made more readable. They additionally suggested to evaluate any emblems on the uniform shoulder. The producer gave stringent support for relevant archival research and family consult. The film has a duration of 199.07 minutes to be directed by Anurag Singh.
Casts, themes and theatrical expectation
In the film Border 2, the telltale intricate tale of valor and sacrifice features prominent Indian soldierly persons as pivotal characters. Every frame is scripted out of the liveliness of the 1971 Indian-Pakistani war with a view of glorifying the ideal of patriotism.
Trade analysts are not expecting the film to recover appreciably by itself. It will enjoy a surge on public holidays, special ticket prices, or additional marketing practices, but the film is likely to settle down next week, provided that none of these factors come into play. For the time being, Border 2 can be proud of itself for an invincible opening and a somewhat erratic fall characteristic of big-scale, front-loaded releases.
