Trinamool Leader Jahangir Khan Arrested Near Nepal Border Amid Extortion Probe in Falta

Jahangir Khan, the TMC's man in Falta, has been taken into custody on the India-Nepal border over an extortion matter. With his court protection now a thing of the past, this is set to have some weighty consequences for the politics in Falta, especially with the BJP on the up and there are still open cases on Khan's record.

It was on Monday that police in north Bengal made their move and arrested the All India Trinamool Congress leader. It’s an arrest that could well put a new spin on the story in West Bengal’s Falta constituency, as they look at an extortion case and other complaints from the election days.

Arrest near Nepal border and why it matters

You could say this puts a period to some of the rancour we’ve seen in Falta after a hard-fought assembly round. The authorities won’t be drawn on the nitty-gritty of how they did it, but they will have more to say as things progress.

In a way, it’s what the opposition has been calling for. After some footage of Khan having words with a cop made the rounds, people who put in reports about being put in their place by the local big wigs’ henchmen will see this as a change in tone.

Legal turn after court protection lapsed

There was a turning point in the law for Khan. A Calcutta High Court bench put its foot down and would not let him have the kind of interim cover he had for a time during the polls in five separate FIRs.

That shield was only good until 26 May, and had to do with the repolling on the 21st. Since then, the police have put it on the table: Khan is up against seven FIRs at the Falta station in South 24 Parganas.

What the police have and have not said

They’ll confirm the tie to the extortion and the operation in the border area, but you won’t get the fine print on the charges just yet. Let the preliminary work be done and the investigators will lay out where this is heading.

The ‘Pushpa’ persona and a campaign flashpoint

Khan was fond of the ‘Pushpa’ moniker, much like the movie, while his opponents were busy making a case on law and order. There was an incident at the polls where he is said to have put down a police officer, which drew no end of flak and put a spotlight on the whole issue of political muscle.

Then in mid-May, Suvendu Adhikari made it known he would be on top of any case against the one they called Pushpa. Khan eventually bailed out of the running, citing pressure, and came in fourth in the repoll.

Falta’s voting shift and immediate fallout

When the repoll happened in Falta, you had an 88% turnout with CAPF all over the place; voters said they felt safe to go in and mark their X. And with Khan out of the picture two days before, the TMC flags were for the most part nowhere to be seen.

BJP’s Debangshu Panda put away 1,09,021 votes to win, a bigger margin even than in Matigara-Naxalbari. In Falta, the party took 71.2% of the vote, a far cry from the 36.7% in 2021, while the CPM was left in the dust in second place.

What comes next

Here is what to keep an eye on:

– The details of the charges from the police

– Upcoming dates in the extortion case

– Word on any interrogation in custody

– How the TMC and others respond

– A look at security in Falta after the takedown

This also gets to the heart of something the campaign was all about: can you get away with strongman tactics when you have some viral video to show for it? For Khan, it’s the courtroom from here on in, not the dais.

For the people of Falta, the way the numbers have come in and the kind of repoll we had has already changed the rules of the game. This Monday’s arrest only cements that, with allegations of coercion and extortion right in the middle of it.

The authorities have said they will put more out there as they dig in. With several FIRs on the table and the extortion case in the limelight, it will be up to the timeline of the courts and the police to see how fast the dust in the political arena is put down.
