The recent buzz around the supposed separation of the so-called power couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan has put the tongues of the entertainment world into motion. Combining the power of talent and beauty with which the world is familiar, the two were married in 2007 amidst a lot of celebration. Rumors about their marriage being on shaky grounds have lately been making the rounds.
Both had always kept their doors closed to the media when it came to their private lives. While attempting to keep all their personal affairs under wraps, Aishwarya and Abhishek did give the world some insight into what they weighed in on marriage and divorce during a 2009 interview with none other than Oprah Winfrey.
Abhishek shared a heartwarming anecdote of his proposal to Aishwarya during the Oprah interview. He had reminisced, “I was filming in New York, and I would stand at the balcony of my hotel, wishing that I could be there with her. Some time later, I took her to the same balcony, and she asked me to marry her.” Romantic gestures like these have always been a part of their love story.
The conversation took an interesting turn when Oprah looked into Indian weddings, which are all about grandeur and festivity. Abhishek explained how Indian weddings have always been grandiose because the entire country loves celebrations. Oprah mentioned in jest about how challenging it must be to now consider divorce after such an expensive wedding ceremony. Aishwarya softly retorted, ”We don’t even try and entertain that thought.”
It then shifted to discussing how living with one’s parents after marriage is part of Indian culture. This invited Oprah to go after the couple about their living arrangements. In response, Abhishek reversed the situation with a playful remark by asking, “Did you live with your parents?” This statement brought up the relation to Western norms.
Another instance would be in 2005, during her appearance on the David Letterman Show, when Aishwarya used wit in her response to a question about Indians living with parents. She joked, “It’s fine to live with your parents because it’s also common in India that we don’t have to take appointments to meet our parents for dinner.” Splendidly, she always manages to mix some humor with cultural implications to win over any crowd.
While the marital status is around rumors, Aishwarya captivates audiences with her acting talent, the last of which is Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan II. In contrast, Abhishek is wrapping up King, directed by Siddharth Anand, featuring an ensemble cast of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
Seen as dynamic, all eyes are on them, waiting for any updates while the duo’s charming chemistry and value systems remain sources of admiration within the Bollywood circles. These days there is some storm brewing in the tabloids, which the duo had to brave alone. But these two have stood the test of time, weathering the ups and downs with great style and elegance.
