In an important step towards fleet modernization, a retrofitting of old A320neo aircraft has been completed by Air India, under the Tata Group. The renovation to Air India’s aged fleet is part of a big $400 million effort on the airline to enhance passenger delight. With the last of the 27 aircraft returning to active service, Air India now operates a fleet of 104 A320 Family aircraft with state-of-the-art cabin ergonomics and a new livery.
A Modernized Fleet for Comfort
A retrofit program was launched in September 2024 and was completed within a span of an incredible one year. The changes brought about included refurbishing the interiors to a uniform three-class cabin layout-Business, Premium Economy, and Economy-and installing more than 4,000 new seats throughout the fleet. This includes 216 Business Class seats, 648 Premium Economy seats, and 3,564 Economy Class seats.
Significant material upgrades accompanied the cabin overhaul to emphasize greater looks and comfort. A total of 450 meters of fine leather, 15,000 meters of fabric, and 5,000 square meters of carpeting went into creating a more high-end ambience for passengers. In addition, each set is fitted with USB-A and USB-C portsfor travelers to charge their devices and log in to Air India’s new in-flight entertainment service, Vista Stream.
Vista Stream: Entertainment at Your Fingertips
Vista Stream provides almost 900 hours of movies, TV shows, and other premium content for viewing on personal devices. This integration elevates Air India’s narrowbody experience to an international level and greatly enhances passenger satisfaction. Reflecting this improvement, Air India managed to maintain between 45 and 50 NPS points for its narrowbody operations-a clear indicator of increased customer satisfaction.
Extensive Network Coverage
The retrofit being finished, followed by the deliveries bringing in new aircrafts into the fleet, ensures that Air India is now handling a picturesque 3,024 flights every week on 82 routes of domestic and short-haul international category from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The A320 Family entered into a modernized state to serve important domestic routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Bengaluru while keeping up an international presence to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Malé, Riyadh, and Singapore.
The transformation would continue according to the CEO
Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, applauded Air India to say that this retrofit expresses the termination of the first phase of the narrowbody transformation. It has been restated that Air India is committed to maximizing customer comfort and tightening product consistency all across the network. “With over 100 of our A320 Family aircraft now featuring modern interiors,” Wilson stated, “our guests will enjoy a superior travel experience.”
Further plans to go beyond A320neo
First in line will be Air India’s A321 legacy retrofitting program, scheduled for 2026 with the Vistara fleet integration following suit after their merger into Air India. Further development involves the upgrading of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, with refurbishment of the very first aircraft now underway in the United States and targeting completion toward mid-2027. Boeing 777-300ER upgrades follow close behind, slated for completion in October 2028.
Later, Air India will continue modernization efforts despite supply chain challenges slightly short-circuiting some timelines, going as promised. This commitment is linked to the above vision of complementing the passenger experience with operational excellence.
In conclusion, as Air India continues on its transformation under new ownership, the A320neo retrofit stands as a promising glimpse into the future of Indian aviation. With one modernization after the other lined up for other types in their fleet, truly, passengers can expect to be looked after with consistent service reflecting world standards!
