With the internet as divided as ever, Karan Johar has made no secret of his support for the spy thriller. He is asking people to back off from the doom scrolling. The 9.25 crore that came in on day 1 from 7,534 shows is, in his eyes, a fine showing, reviews be damned.
Johar pushes back at online negativity
He has been using his platform to make a case for the theatres and the ones who patronise them. In his telling, Alpha is a victory for the big screen; the public will still come out even when the timeline gets ugly.
Some of the things he had to say in his post:
– The audience is ‘way above online negativity’
– Those in the theatre are the ‘true warriors’
– You can’t deny Alia’s ‘stardom and theatrical pull’
– A spectacle like this should be met with ‘applause and not any toxicity’
– ‘Please relax… cinemas are breathing’
Then there is the matter of Alia Bhatt. Johar has no doubts about her ability or her appeal. The point he was making was plain: let the footfalls have the last word, not the people on their screens.
Why Alpha is drawing debate
Reactions to the film have been all over the map. Some are into the clean action and the set pieces, while you have others looking for more substance in the writing and the characters.
One of our own called it a good time in the spy-universe, if a bit more action than script. There was praise for Alia’s new look as an action star and for Sharvari, too. It is a fun watch, even if you spot a few well-worn tropes.
It is a franchise that tends to ruffle feathers. That a women-led entry is getting this kind of notice is in itself a sign of how much the audience is interested, noise and all.
What the numbers and timing say
When it hit the big screen on July 3rd, 9.25 crore was put up on the board from 7,534 shows. Johar sees it as a good way to start, given that, as he would have it, getting butts in seats is no easy task these days.
There is some context to be had. You can try to get folks out of their living rooms, but Alpha’s early run of form is proof that a star-driven actioner still has legs, regardless of the ebb and flow of online opinion.
He also has a round of applause for Yash Raj Films for the way they stand behind their larger-than-life properties. When the industry is in the process of righting itself, you don’t need the toxicity.
Cast, universe, and what it adds
This is the first in the YRF Spy Universe to be put in the hands of a woman. Alia and Sharvari are Sita and Durga, two top-tier agents and sisters who have to put aside their differences for Operation Odyssey.
Bobby Deol is on hand as the imposing Fateh Singh. Anil Kapoor is the RAW Chief, and Hrithik Roshan is back as Major Kabir for a cameo, to tie in with the rest of the world we know.
Shiv Rawail is at the helm with Aditya Chopra producing. They are after a story with some heft and the kind of flair you want to see in a cinema hall. That is what Johar is asking people to get behind.
What comes next for viewers
The talk about Alpha isn’t going to die down, but the message from Johar is to go see it for yourself. If you are for the action and the world-building, then a ticket is in order. As for the rest, he figures it will sort itself out.
