For the PM, this was a chance to make his case to President Donald Trump and the American people. He made of the 250th a point of connection, a way to show that the occasion is as much a shared one as it is a US milestone, and to set the stage for further cooperation.
What happened
‘On behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, I extend my warmest congratulations to President Trump and the people of the United States on the historic 250th anniversary of your Independence,’ the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X on Saturday.
It is a relationship founded on some of the same principles, he said, and one that is more than just a strategic arrangement. With democracy, the rule of law and human potential in mind, he described the friendship as ‘a force for global good’.
Then he put in a word for the future: ‘May the next 250 years bring even greater prosperity, peace and progress for America and take the India-US partnership to new heights.’
Why it matters for India-US ties
This from the top of the government in New Delhi at a time when both sides are making a point of where their interests align. You can see it in the last 20 years or so: the scope of what they do together has moved well past security into trade, technology and energy, with a steady focus on the technologies of tomorrow.
Key areas of cooperation
Some of the ground being covered now includes:
– Defence, with military exercises and a move toward better interoperability
– A wider net for trade in goods and services
– Working with each other on critical and new technologies
– Energy, be it conventional or clean
– Quantum and AI
– Nuclear science
Regional coordination
There is also the matter of the Quad. With Japan and Australia, the US and India are in step on regional security and the idea of a free and open Indo-Pacific. That is part of the strategy behind the PM’s words.
How the US marked the milestone
Across the United States, there has been no shortage of parades, fireworks and other events to see in the 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was put to paper on July 4, 1776.
To call it one of the most important national occasions in the country’s history is not an overstatement, given the scale of what has been put on for the quarter-millennium.
The US has the America250, or Freedom250, for that. It is a public-private effort by the government to put the 250th of July 4, 2026, in the spotlight for the whole year.
What comes next
Modi’s note is about carrying things forward. The kind of ties you have when you stand for the same things-democracy, the rule of law-are what will underpin the next chapter. His tone is in keeping with the goal of elevating the partnership.
All in all, the relationship is set to get even closer, with a view to global progress. So the greeting from New Delhi on such a day was as much about intent as it was about good wishes. It is a signal that New Delhi means to keep up the pace in defence, trade and technology.
