Indian Railways Mandates Photo ID for RailOne App Bookings from July 15, 2026

Indian Railways will require a photo ID for online general ticket bookings on the RailOne app starting July 15, 2026. This change aims to prevent ticket misuse and enhance security by linking tickets to verified identities. Passengers must show the live ticket in the app and carry the original ID used during booking.

Indian Railways is rewriting the playbook for unreserved travel. From July 15, 2026, photo ID will be mandatory for online general ticket bookings on the RailOne app, and ticket screenshots will no longer pass checks. The move seeks to curb misuse, strengthen verification, and protect commuters from black marketing.

Why the rule matters for commuters

Railway officials say the update targets two persistent issues: tickets being resold in black and transfers to other travellers after booking. By tying each digital ticket to a verified identity, the system aims to ensure that the person who books is the person who boards.

Prayagraj Division PRO Amit Kumar Singh said passengers should carry their original ID from July 15th. If the ID on a RailOne booking does not match the passenger’s actual ID, action may follow under railway regulations.

What exactly changes on July 15, 2026

Here are the core changes passengers should note:

– Screenshots and WhatsApp ticket images are invalid

– The live ticket must be shown within the RailOne app

– A photo ID is mandatory during online booking

– Carry the same original ID used at booking

– Rules apply only to RailOne unreserved tickets

– Counter purchases remain unchanged

How the RailOne process will work now

The process is still app-first, but identity-led. Travellers log in with their registered mobile number, choose General Ticket, add boarding and destination, then select an ID type such as Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, or driving licence, and enter its number.

Fares appear after details are entered. Payment options include UPI, debit card, credit card, or net banking. Once successful, a digital ticket with the linked ID number appears inside the RailOne app. Ticket examiners may check both the ticket and the ID during inspection.

Impact on misuse and security

By invalidating forwarded screenshots and WhatsApp photos, Railways is closing the most common loophole for transferring tickets. Only the in-app ticket tied to the registered mobile number will be treated as valid.

If a passenger shows only a screenshot or a forwarded image instead of the live ticket in the app, it may be treated as travelling without a valid ticket. Such cases could invite penalties under railway rules.

What commuters should do next

To avoid last-minute trouble, passengers should take simple steps now:

– Install or update the RailOne app

– Keep the original ID used for booking

– Ensure entered ID details are accurate

– Do not forward ticket images to anyone

– Use the same registered mobile during checks

Offline tickets remain unchanged

The new identity rule does not affect station counters. If you buy an unreserved ticket at a railway station, no ID is required at the time of purchase, and that process stays the same. The change is limited to online general tickets booked through the RailOne app.

For millions who rely on unreserved travel, the shift blends convenience with accountability. With July 15, 2026 approaching, the message is simple: book with a valid photo ID, keep the original ready, and show the live ticket inside RailOne when asked. The rest of the routine remains familiar.
