Andhra Pradesh on High Alert: Covid-19 Deaths and Omicron Variant Concerns

With two Covid-19 deaths in Kadapa and eight active cases, Andhra Pradesh has put itself on high alert. There is a belief among officials that an Omicron subvariant of some virulence may be involved, so genome sequencing is being expedited. For now, containment is the order of the day and residents are being asked to be circumspect and follow the rules.

The state is once again on notice after the virus claimed two lives in Kadapa, while another eight are being kept in check. As medical types look into whether a hard-hitting Omicron strain is behind it, they have put the fast track on sequencing. The message from those in charge is to be watchful, but not to overreact as we put more measures in place.

What set off the alarm

It is the first time since 2022 that the health department has put local medical networks on high alert in the wake of virus-related fatalities. In both instances, the deceased had serious breathing problems; an exam showed the kind of bilateral lung injury you would expect with coronavirus.

We are watching eight live cases in the district, with a harder line on monitoring and isolation. Rapid response units have been put in to make sure this does not spread any further.

Some early reports at odds, here is the patient profile

The records show one of them, a 60-year-old, was first treated at the Sri Venkateswara Institute in Tirupati before being transferred to the Christian Medical College in Vellore. He had diabetes and kidney issues and passed away while under care for his condition. An RT-PCR after the fact put it down to Covid-19.

Then there was the 46-year-old at the Government General Hospital-RIMS in Kadapa. He came in with pneumonia and badly damaged lungs and did not make it through treatment.

You will see some numbers don’t quite add up in the press. Some have put forward a 52-year-old from Rajampet who died at CMC Vellore or a 43-year-old from a government hospital in Kadapa. We are working to straighten out the details while we focus on what matters.

How it went down

One of the patients came in with a cough and could hardly catch his breath. Four days of heavy antibiotics made no difference, and a CT scan told the story: viral damage to the lungs in keeping with the virus.

Those on the ground say the speed with which the respiratory trouble set in made for a difficult case to manage.

Kadapa’s response

Right after the deaths, the District Medical and Health Officer put the brakes on any potential for more by mobilising teams to clean up in the neighbourhoods and do some thorough contact tracing.

If you have a mild case, you are to stay home. Otherwise, there are wards for you. They have run about 40 samples from the area; 18 have come back negative, and we are waiting on the others.

Could a new variant be the cause?

The severity of what has been seen in the clinic has led some to think an Omicron subvariant is at work. We have sent over to the National Institute of Virology in Pune to have the samples sequenced and put to rest any questions.

These seem like isolated incidents with some extreme medical history behind them, according to the top brass. But until we have the full picture, the public is to be on guard without any need for hysteria.

The word from the top

Savita, the in-charge minister for the district, has been over the preparations and has made it clear that the guidelines are to be enforced. Hospitals are to have their isolation bays and staff in order.

There is also a directive to spot anyone with a fever or a hard time breathing and get them to an isolation unit if need be. Their families will be put through the motions of testing and monitoring.

Authorities have put out the following for the people to keep in mind:

– Be on your guard and be hygienic

– A mask is a must in tight quarters

– If you feel something is wrong, see a doctor

– When you are told to isolate, do so

– Work with the tracing teams

Why it is of note

The loss of two in Kadapa is a reminder of how bad things were, though our ability to test and handle cases is in much better shape. As of 12 July 2026, we have eight we are keeping a close eye on.

Pune will let us know if a new Omicron is in the mix. In the meantime, the plan is to contain, to treat, and to be open with the public without stoking any fear.
