Instagram Tests ‘Your Algorithm’ Controls for Real-Time Feed Customization

Instagram is in the process of rolling out some new 'Your Algorithm' controls so you can put your own spin on your feed as you go. It's all about making it easier to get a more personal experience and weeding out the stuff you don't care for. You'll be able to get to these tools from the home screen or Reels without any fuss.

Think of it as a change in how you make your feed your own. With fresh customisation options, Instagram is putting ‘Your Algorithm’ where you can see it. The platform is trialling a way for you to let them know on the spot what you’re in the mood for. Adam Mosseri has given us a look at it.

No need to wade through settings

Mosseri’s take is that ‘Your Algorithm’ should be within arm’s reach in the app, not some option you have to dig for. He wants to give you the kind of real-time input that doesn’t get in the way of a good scroll.

‘You should be able to fine-tune it right from the home screen, in the moment,’ he said.

What this means for you

It’s no secret that for a while now people have been saying the algorithm is pushing too many suggested posts over the ones from the accounts they actually follow. A comment on one of Mosseri’s posts put it best: ‘WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW.’

This is Instagram’s way of giving you some say in the matter. In Mosseri’s words, ‘We want your algorithm to be something you have a conversation with, not something that just happens to you.’

The ins and outs of the test

They are looking at a few different ways to make personalisation feel like part of the flow. Mosseri has shown off some of the places you might run into them, like the home feed and Reels.

Some of the things they are mulling over:

– A ‘Your Algorithm’ menu if you pull down on the feed

– Swiping up on a Reel to change what comes up next

– Hitting a button under a Reel for more or less of the same

– Quick-fire ‘more of this’ or ‘less of that’ type of feedback

A bit of background

When ‘Your Algorithm’ came on the scene in 2025, it was to let you pick and choose which topics to put in front of you or leave alone. Now it’s a matter of being able to do it on the fly instead of after a trip to the settings page.

If this goes live for everyone, those controls will be much more at your fingertips.

What’s a done deal and what isn’t

Don’t count on every idea making the cut. ‘Some of this is a work in progress, some is on the way, some may not pan out. I’d like to hear from you,’ Mosseri wrote. It is an experiment, after all.

But you can read between the lines: they want to make it a matter of seconds to fix up your feed.

One thing for the creators

There’s also a minor but handy addition for carousel posts. If you put in a toggle when you’re making a post, you can now have a separate caption for each photo. Before, you were limited to one for the whole set.

Makes for a neater story and better context, no tricks required.

Bottom line

Instagram is trying to let you have a hand in your recommendations where you find them, not in some corner of the app. When this is out there, you can nudge the system, filter out the noise and get on with it.

Keep an eye on the in-feed and Reels for the new buttons as they put the finishing touches on it.
