Karthi will be returning to the big screen with a lot of personality in “Vaa Vaathiyaar”, an action comedy now coming out on December 12th. The film’s third song, “Mu Dha La Li”, was revealed with the new release date, and offers fans a look at the film’s bright and colorful look.
A masala hero born from MGR nostalgia
The movie centers around a policeman who was raised by his grandfather, a huge fan of MGR (a very popular, larger-than-life Tamil actor). Because of his grandfather, the policeman becomes like MGR – adopting his style and confidence and acting like a hero from the 80s and 90s. Then something unexpected happens that completely changes things for him.
“Vaa Vaathiyaar” is aiming for a combination of comedy, fast-paced action, and emotional moments. The story supposedly changes when the grandfather’s life is put in danger, making Karthi’s character, Ramu, rethink what he’s doing. It will have that older, bold style of hero, memorable lines, and exciting scenes.
Karthi and Krithi Shetty headline a packed ensemble
Karthi is Ramu, and Krithi Shetty is the main female role. Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anandaraj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, GM Sundar, Vadivukkarasi, Madhur Mittal, and Nivas Adithan are also in important roles. This will be Karthi’s 27th film, and because he’s the star, it’s getting a lot of attention.
Nalan Kumarasamy returns with a full-on entertainer
Nalan Kumarasamy is directing the film, and it’s his first Tamil movie in five years. He says “Vaa Vaathiyaar” is a full-on action “masala” film (a type of over-the-top Indian movie with action, comedy, and romance), and is meant to have the energetic feel of the 80s and 90s, but still appeal to audiences today. The teaser showed a flashy police officer arriving and being enthusiastically welcomed.
Santhosh Narayanan’s music sets the tone
Santhosh Narayanan is doing the music, and he has worked with Nalan Kumarasamy before on “Soodhu Kavvum” and “Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum”. “Mu Dha La Li” is sung by Subhalashini, and the words are by Durai. Previously, “Uyir Pathikaama”, sung by Vijaynarain, Aditya Ravindran, and Santhosh Narayanan (lyrics by Vivek), was released.

Because it’s coming out on December 12th, “Vaa Vaathiyaar” will be released during the holidays. If people like it, it’s likely to do well in theaters, given Karthi’s fans and the fact that it’s based on a fondly remembered time in Tamil film. Moving it from December 5th also gives the team more time to share the songs and other advertising.
Karthi’s busy slate continues
Right after “Meiyazhagan”, Karthi is doing the action-comedy “Vaa Vaathiyaar”. He’s also going to be in “Sardar 2” with director PS Mithran (it’s a sequel to the 2022 spy thriller that was a hit), and he’s currently filming “Marshal”, with Kalyani Priyadarshan, which is an action film. He’s very busy in 2025.
Krithi Shetty’s December double
Krithi Shetty will be in another movie on December 18, 2025: “Love Insurance Kompany” (LIK). This sci-fi romantic comedy, directed by Vignesh Shivan and also starring Pradeep Ranganathan, is a different type of film than “Vaa Vaathiyaar”, and gives her a variety of projects.
Hype, heritage, and high spirits
“Vaa Vaathiyaar”, with its hero inspired by MGR and its lively scenes, is aimed at families and fans of classic Tamil action films. Karthi, Nalan Kumarasamy, and Santhosh Narayanan all have good reputations and are likely to bring a lot of people to the film, and the large group of actors makes it even more appealing.
