Harendra Singh has resigned from his position as the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team effective immediately due to personal reasons. On the same day, the experienced coach emailed his resignation to Hockey India and appreciated the federation and players for a time which he defined as the most significant in his career.
Being in charge of the Indian women’s hockey team has been an honor and a highlight of my career, Harendra stated. However, personal reasons are pushing me to take a step back, but I will always be connected to this great team through my thoughts and feelings.
He also assured that he would be helping Hockey India in any way possible for them to achieve their goal of improving the sport’s standards. ‘I am grateful I had a chance to work with Hockey India and I will not stop but rather continue to be an influence in breaking barriers and taking the Indian hockey team to the highest levels of success,’ he opined.
What Are the Reasons for Harendra Singh’s Resignation?
The official version given for the resignation of the head coach was that it had to do with personal reasons. This conclusion came at a time when the Indian women’s hockey team was going through poor results and was complaining of a very tough schedule at the same time. The President of Hockey India Mr. Dilip Tirkey, mentioned that the association has accepted the resignation and that a new head coach will soon be appointed.
The resignation also caused some troubles. According to some in between the players who had talked to the media, there were issues like being domineering on the part of the coaching staff but Tirkey, the president of HI, cleared that this is not the reason for the resignation. On the other hand, a source from Hockey India stated that besides injuries in the core group, low performance was also attributed to the big problem.
Mixed Outcomes During His Time of Management
Harendra had taken control in April 2024, and he had a significant success in the very beginning when he led India to the Asian Champions Trophy Title in Rajgir, November last year. That success was considered a show of the team’s ambitious plan to return to the top ranks.
The Pro League competition confirmed the tale. India finished the FIH Pro League 2024-25 campaign with a tally of no more than two victories in a total of 16 games, ending up at the bottom of the Pool B and thus being eliminated from the tournament. The following year they were not signed up again, an issue that highlights the extent of reconstruction to be done.
Harendra had an impressive history when he joined. He had originally been the coach of the men’s team of the United States and then, he spectacularly took the Indian junior men to win the World Cup in Lucknow in 2016. His appointment was a clear-cut case of a push towards system, ferocity, and winning spirit.
Hockey India’s Response
Dilip Tirkey praised Harendra’s contribution and his broader commitment to Indian hockey. ‘We are grateful to Harendra Singh for the service he offered, and for his extensive knowledge as well. A replacement will be named sooner rather than later beside the best of luck for him,’ Tirkey said.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh mentioned that there is no issue with preparing for the upcoming qualifiers. ‘We express our solidarity with Harendra Singh and his work for the team. We hope the best for him,’ he stated.
Possible Successor: Sjoerd Marijne
Informants have revealed that Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne is a favorite to take over the role of chief coach again. Marijne had already made history with the Indian women’s team when he led them to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the team’s highest-ever ranking, before he resigned at the end of the year.
A return of Marijne would mean smooth transition, given his previous work with the main squad and his successful game plan. The major difficulty to face would be to combine old strategies with current squad’s needs, from fitness controlling to tactical rethinking.
Injuries and Player Welfare
Fitness has become a serious issue in the world of sports. According to a well-informed source in Hockey India, up to 13 key players in the core group have been out with injuries, which has affected the team’s consistency and the coach’s selection. Injuries are expected to keep on frustrating the team even in the future; thus, it is important for the coach to apply proper measures when it comes to workloads, recovery, and depth of the squad.
The next managerial staff is to integrate both the high standards and the players’ well-being. Top-level hockey demands toughness, but extended victorious runs depend on honesty, simplicity, and the players’ commitment to the team. This balance will matter as much as the tactical considerations and the outcomes of the games.
The Road Ahead
The immediate fix must come through stabilizing the coaching system, fast-tracking rehabilitation, and regaining faith. For the sake of the upcoming qualifiers, such areas as more efficient penalty corner conversion, disciplined defense, and strategic on-floor operations should be the centre for India’s focus.
The breakthrough made during Harendra’s regime, with the victory of the Asian Champions Trophy title, clearly revealed the team’s potential. The Indian women’s hockey team can totally change the course of the situation and work towards a strong international comeback if they get the right coach at the right time, merger of their efforts via fitness plan, and focused build-up.
