West Indies have picked a 15-man group for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026; Shai Hope will be captain, and Jason Holder is a significant addition. The competition begins February 7th in India and Sri Lanka, and the West Indies have gone with experience and a lot of different skills as they try to get their third T20 World Cup win.
Shai Hope is captain again
Hope, age 32, is back in the T20 team after not playing in the recent matches against Afghanistan, as he was playing in the SA20. He’s played 58 T20 Internationals, got 1,403 runs with an average of 29.22 and a strike rate of 137.68 – including nine half-centuries and one hundred. His steady style and reliable batting make him a natural person to be in charge of this experienced team.
The team and players coming back
The 15 West Indies players are: Shai Hope (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles, Brandon King, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Quentin Sampson, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, Matthew Forde. Jason Holder and Rovman Powell are back after having a break, and they give the team more all-round ability and players who can finish well.
Quentin Sampson is the player who could make a big difference. The 25-year-old from Guyana did well in the Caribbean Premier League, making 241 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 151.57. He played his first T20 International in Dubai and was picked because of his strong hitting and the way he’s been playing in T20s at home.
How the bowling will work and the team’s plans
West Indies have put together a bowling side which can do many things. The fast bowlers are Holder, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde, who offer speed and the ability to make the ball move in the air. Akeal Hosein will be the main spinner, with Roston Chase and Gudakesh Motie helping him – a good group for the pitches in India and Sri Lanka.
Shamar Joseph is back after a 2025 where he was often unable to play, and Seales is good at keeping things under control and making the ball swing. The people choosing the team seem to want a lot of choice: left-arm spin which comes straight on, off-spin options, and different kinds of seam bowling so they can deal with the pitches in India and Sri Lanka.
Experience and new players
Those choosing the team have chosen players with experience; 11 players in the team were in the last World Cup which was played at home. That will help with leading the team when things are difficult. At the same time, younger players like Sampson and Matthew Forde give the team new energy and the chance to score boundaries.
Evin Lewis and Alzarri Joseph are not in the team, because they’ve recently been hurt. Their not being there shows how important being fit is going into a long competition on difficult pitches.
What the groups are and the first matches
West Indies are in Group C with England, Scotland, Nepal and Italy. They start their competition on February 7th at Eden Gardens, Kolkata – the same place where they won the title in 2016. A practice match against South Africa is planned as last preparation, giving them a good chance to practice against a strong team.
Playing England will be the most important match in the group, but the matches against Scotland, Nepal and Italy will give them chances to make their team and batting order better early in the competition.
What to look for
We can expect a batting style which is looking to score quickly, along with clever spin bowling on pitches which turn. Hope’s leadership will probably mean taking risks when batting at the start, and changing the bowlers to make the most of the players they’re up against. Holder’s experience as a former captain and all-rounder will make the middle of the batting order and the bowling plans stronger.
West Indies go into the T20 World Cup 2026 with a team of players who’ve been around a while and players who can make an impact. The team being chosen shows a clear plan: use experience, support T20 players who are in good form, and be able to quickly adjust to the conditions in India and Sri Lanka as they try to win another world championship.
