Air India Introduces Basic Fare Option, Unbundling Meals to Lower Ticket Prices

Air India has put a Basic fare on the table for some of its domestic runs, untying meals from the ticket to make it more affordable for the average economy passenger. You still get the basics like your bag and a drink, but food is up to you. It's an effort to win over the kind of flyer who watches their wallet, and we'll see how it goes with some customer input.

In a way, it’s a trial of a no-frills option on certain routes. By parting with the free meal, Air India can bring the price of an Economy ticket down and open up some room for choice. The pilot is in place to court the price-sensitive crowd, all while the rest of the allowances and hot beverages are left as they are.

Don’t think of it as a cutback so much as a matter of flexibility, the airline would have you believe. If you do want your meal to be part of the package, you can always go with one of the Value, Classic or Flex fares that are already on offer.

Market positioning and strategy

It’s a way for the Tata Group’s carrier to fine-tune its fare structure without turning the whole thing upside down. The new Basic is in the mix with the 2024 Value, Classic and Flex lines, which still come with the works: free meals and the like.

The idea behind Basic is to let you pay for what you’re going to use, nothing more. Air India will be on hand to review the feedback from this run before making any calls on where to go from here.

What the Basic fare changes

You won’t be short-changed on the essentials. An Economy booker on Basic still has 15 kg for check-in and 7 kg for the cabin. And there’s still a cup of tea or coffee on us. What’s different is that the meal is now something you have to opt in for.

If you want to put a cap on your spending, you can buy your meal in advance, up to a day before you fly. They have Vegetarian, Non-Vegetarian, Jain and Diabetic on the menu, per Air India.

For anyone mulling over the Basic, here’s the bottom line:

– No free meals with Basic

– Your tea or coffee is still on the house

– 15 kg for your checked bag in Economy

– 7 kg for carry-on on a Basic fare

Booking access and service guarantees

You can put a hold on a Basic fare right now on a number of domestic routes via the app, website, or even at the airport. The point is, it’s an alternative, not a across-the-board mandate.

And if your plans go awry? Air India has been clear: a schedule change or rebooking means your pre-bought meal comes with you. Can’t make the transfer? You get it back in cash.

What remains with other fare families

Some people like to have it all in one go. For them, the Value, Classic and Flex are still there, with the complimentary meals and the rest of the bundle. They are a step above the stripped-down Basic.

Having those side by side lets the airline cast a wider net, whether you’re after the very best deal or a bit more to go with it.

Why this matters now

When Air India made a move on Tuesday, it was to test the waters, not to rewrite the rulebook. It’s about making things simple and in line with what you’re willing to fork out, and for those who don’t want to be left out of the meal plan, the experience is as it was.

For the regular on a domestic hop, it’s easy to see: you put down less money to start with and add a plate only when you feel like it. As for the airline, it’s a neat way to adjust the dials on price and service without muddying the waters for the rest of the fare types.

We’ll be watching the response, the airline says. Should the numbers and the reviews look good for both sides, the Basic model is likely to make its way to more of the map.
