Alka Yagnik Honored with Padma Bhushan Amidst Health Challenges and Applause

It was a day for the books at Rashtrapati Bhavan as Alka Yagnik, the face and voice of so much of our Bollywood, was made a Padma Bhushan. Even with the sensorineural hearing loss she has been up against, she put on a show of grace in accepting it, and you could tell it meant something to her fans.

In a way, the 60-year-old turned what is usually a formality into a kind of hush in the room. When President Droupadi Murmu handed over the Padma Bhushan, it had a certain heft to it. After all, this is an icon who has had to put down the microphone for a while to deal with her health.

You only have to see the clip that’s been making the rounds to understand. She comes in with some help, hands folded to receive the award. But first, there is the moment where she goes to touch Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s feet. The hall broke into a long round of applause and the internet followed suit with a lot of feeling.

The moment that moved fans

Once the video was out, the well-wishes were mixed with a bit of worry. People were toasting to the career that has been on their playlists for years, but you could also read the concern over how she looked and hopes for a quick get-well. In short: a well-earned recognition for a voice we can’t let go of.

Back in 2024, Yagnik let on that a virus had come on hard and left her with Sensorineural Hearing Loss. It has been enough to make her put off some work and even put in a word to us about the perils of too much volume. The phone from the composers keeps ringing, but for the time being, she is mending.

An honour many feel was overdue

All of this was part of the 65th Padma Awards, the second of the year’s Civil Investiture Ceremonies at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The citation for Yagnik is a nod to a lifetime of top-shelf playback in some of the most cut-throat times in film music. And then there is the date on the invitation: June 23, 2026. That one will be remembered.

A few things to note from the proceedings:
– The President, Droupadi Murmu, was the one to present the Padma Bhushan to Alka Yagnik.
– We are talking about the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 23, 2026.
– She did require a hand to make her way to the dais.
– A respectful touch of the PM’s feet before moving on.
– The hearing loss has been a fact of life for her since 2024.
– 131 in all: five Vibhushan, 13 Bhushan, 113 Shri.
– You will also find Mammootty, R Madhavan and the late Satish Shah in the list of honourees.
– Arvind Shah was there to take the award for his brother.

Style, presence, and quiet grit

She made an entrance in a printed kurta with some fine floral and paisley work, and an organza dupatta to go with it. Some gold bangles, a ring, a red bindi and you had the whole picture. No over-the-top makeup; just the poise of someone who doesn’t need to put on a show.

That was what you were left with. Put aside the recuperation from the viral attack for a minute and you see her standing firm in the light. For those of us who have had her in our ear for a long time, it was a touching sight to see her being lauded as she puts herself back together.

A voice that scored an era

If you think of the 90s and 2000s, you are thinking of Yagnik. From Khalnayak to DDLJ and Taal, or the like of Choli Ke Peeche and Pardesi Pardesi – these are the ones that still run in your head. She is the sound of a certain kind of Bollywood.

Look at the awards and they are in abundance: two Nationals, seven Filmfares, and now the 2026 Padma Bhushan. Then there is the Guinness World Record for being one of the most-watched on YouTube, with billions of streams to her name.

What comes next

Don’t expect to hear a new track from her any time soon. She has said as much: no recording until she is better. And we are fine with that. Let her be. On a day like this, the feeling is clear: you heal, we’ll be here for the rest.
