India’s AI App Race Intensifies: Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT Compete for Growth and Revenue

The AI app market in India is no place for the timid. It is a hard-fought arena where Claude is putting on rapid growth, Gemini is seeing higher levels of user engagement and ChatGPT is top of the revenue table. According to Sensor Tower, the data from these platforms vying for dominance in downloads, time share and spending tells the story of their strategic manoeuvres.

Sensor Tower figures put a finer point on the intensifying race in India’s AI sector, with some stark differences in how each is performing. In Q2 2026 alone, Claude’s Indian downloads were up 30 times over to 8.5 million; Gemini more than doubled its installs to 18.1 million and brought its engagement share to 18.7 per cent; and ChatGPT was the leader in monetisation at Rs 112.8 crore.

Claude’s rise reshapes the growth narrative

In just one quarter, Anthropic’s Claude has gone from being something of an also-ran to a serious contender. Year-on-year downloads in India have leapt over 30-fold to 8.5 million, an indication of the new-user traction it is building.

The money has followed. Consumer outlay on the app has nearly kept up, climbing 19 times to some Rs 62.2 crore in the second quarter of 2026. It is a sign of strong early conversion even if the overall base is not as large.

“You can see a more consistent momentum with Claude, both in downloads and monthly active users since the start of 2026,” says Eve Chen, an insights analyst with Sensor Tower. “It is becoming a player you cannot overlook despite having a smaller user base.”

Engagement momentum shifts toward Gemini

Where it comes down to attention, Google’s Gemini is making its mark. The app has more than doubled its year-on-year downloads in India to 18.1 million for Q2 2026.

More to the point, the amount of time users are devoting to GenAI apps has given Gemini an 18.7 per cent share, a big step up from 4.9 per cent a year ago. There is a disconnect between that kind of attention and the bottom line, so for Google the task now is to convert without ceding user time.

Monetisation leaderboard still OpenAI’s turf

Rivals may be running hard for installs and eyeballs but when it comes to the revenue benchmark, ChatGPT is unchallenged. Sensor Tower puts consumer spending in Q2 at roughly Rs 112.8 crore, a 36 per cent increase on last year.

OpenAI’s income curve is in a league of its own. The rest of the field is more fragmented: Grok came in at about Rs 20.4 crore, Perplexity at Rs 5.8 crore and Gemini was behind at Rs 1.8 crore for the quarter.

The headline numbers for Q2 by metric are as follows:

– 8.5 million for Claude downloads, representing 30-fold-plus growth

– Nearly 19-fold in spending on Claude, or about Rs 62.2 crore

– 18.1 million in Gemini downloads, well over double the prior year

– 18.7 per cent time share for Gemini (was 4.9 per cent)

– Around Rs 112.8 crore in ChatGPT spending, up 36 per cent

– Some Rs 20.4 crore in Grok spending

– Rs 5.8 crore for Perplexity

– Rs 1.8 crore in Gemini spending

A three-lane race: growth, attention, revenue

If the statistics are to be believed, the market is dividing itself. You have Claude as the fastest expander, Gemini taking up more of the user’s time and ChatGPT doing the best job of making money.

It is a source of strategic tension. Those focused on reach and retention have to come up with the right product and pricing to make the conversion, while the ones at the top of the revenue charts have to hold their ground as attention wanders.

Why India matters now

India has emerged as the place to test any global GenAI platform. With the scale here and the price sensitivity, one does not achieve product-market fit in a single launch but in increments.

For the user this means better local onboarding and competitive pricing. For the platforms, the coming quarters will be a trial of whether they can turn that engagement into lasting revenue and not let growth stall.

The June-quarter data from Sensor Tower makes the stakes plain. India is the proving arena for growth engines these days; missteps will be exposed quickly in a market where downloads, time and spending are all in flux.
