This new AI feature will make a digital closet you can search, and allows you to mix and match clothes, and do a virtual try-on. It starts to become available this summer on Android and will then be available on iOS.
What the Wardrobe feature does
According to a post on Google’s blog, Wardrobe will soon find the clothing you are in your photos and will have your whole wardrobe easy to reach. It’s a part of Google Photos and the AI will make a special collection of your clothes from all the pictures you have.
What’s happening inside Google Photos is a scan of all your photos, identifying each item of clothing, and then displaying them in an organized way. When it’s working you’ll be able to look at only shirts, pants, skirts, or jewelry, and find clothes you forgot you had in your actual closet.
Here are the standout capabilities at launch:
– Automatically identify clothing in your photos
– Build a searchable digital closet inside Google Photos
– Filter by category like tops, bottoms, jewelry
– Mix and match items to form outfits
– Share looks or save to moodboards
– Try on selected pieces virtually
Virtual try-ons and moodboards
The most interesting thing about it is the virtual try-on. You pick out items from your digital wardrobe collection, choose ‘Try it on’, and then you’ll see a preview of you in those clothes, all within your photos app.
You can also combine items to make complete outfits, and then share those outfits with your friends, or save them on a kind of a visual list (a moodboard). You can have different moodboards for different situations: clothes for work, for a summer wedding, or for a trip to Italy.
Built on previous Google experiments
This update isn’t entirely new. Since 2023, Google has had a Virtual Try-On function on Google Search, Shopping and Images, to show you what clothes will look like before you buy them. First, you could choose from actual models with similar body shapes, and then you could upload a full picture of yourself.
Rollout timeline and availability
Google says this Wardrobe feature, which is powered by Gemini, will arrive this summer. It will first be available on Android and soon on iPhone. When it’s available, the Wardrobe collection will be in Google Photos and will begin to be created from the images you already have.
Google stated that a new feature in Google Photos will soon sort the clothes you’re wearing in your pictures and make a digital closet for easy access to your clothes. So you will be able to search and combine your outfits, accessories and everyday items without having to look through your wardrobe.
What comes next for users
When it begins to be released, you’ll have a neatly shown list of your clothes, be able to plan outfits more quickly and easily find items you haven’t worn in a long time. With the ability to filter, try clothes on virtually and share moodboards, Google Photos hopes to make it easier to decide what to wear and to be more thoughtful about what you put on. The summer timeframe suggests it will be widely used soon.
