A red card for the United States at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has put Domino’s in the position of handing over $1 million in freebies. For some, it’s more than a headline; it’s a way to make up for one of the more trying moments of the tournament.

It was Folarin Balogun who set it in motion with his ejection in the round of 32 with Bosnia-Herzegovina. He had already put in his third goal of the World Cup before being shown the card in the second half, which also means he won’t be around for the US’ next game. That’s all it took to activate the promotion they put in place some months back.

Who actually gets a free pizza

Don’t expect it if you’re just an onlooker. According to Domino’s, you have to be in the system and part of the Rewards program to be in the running. They will be picking over 60,000 lucky ones at random once the red card is in the books.

For those who put in the effort to sign up, the company says it’s meant to be a little something to make up for a tough call by the ref. In their words, it’s about making a small win out of a bit of letdown.

Before you start looking for a code or credit, here’s what you need to be aware of:
– You had to be on the site by 11.59 pm ET on 10th June
– It’s for Domino’s Rewards accounts only
– We’ll be choosing winners at random
– One medium two-topping pizza for each of them

What the free ‘Emergency Pizza’ includes

We’re talking a no-charge medium two-topping 'Emergency Pizza‘ put on your tab for down the road. All told, we are on the hook for 60,000 of them, or roughly $1 million, as per our word on the campaign.

There is a clock on it, though. Our terms say you have to come in and claim it on or before 2 August 2026.

Why we made a link between pizza and the 2026 World Cup

We put this in play long before the first whistle. Back in a May 18th statement, we made it clear: if a member of the US side got a red, we’d be giving away $1 million in ‘Emergency Pizzas.’ The thinking was to take the edge off for the fans when the game gives you a hard time.

It’s how we see things changing in the world of live sport. We like to mix in the delivery side of things with a bit of showmanship, so when something happens on the pitch, it becomes an incentive for the fan. Some in the industry would call it experiential branding; we see it as a way to be there in the moment.

Part of a wider campaign

The pizza is only one piece of it. We’ve also put together a run of limited edition gear with Saturdays Football. And we have more in the works with some gaming and other collabs to go with it as we head into the World Cup.

We want to keep people with us from one matchday to the next, not just for a blip when the offer is made.

What comes next

Balogun’s red has done its job, so you can count on us to make good on the $1 million. If you’re a fan in the program, all you have to do is wait for the word and use it while you can. As for the US, they’ll be without one of their top scorers for the upcoming fixture.
