The first preview for House of the Dragon’s third season is here – a brief but powerful view of what’s next in the Targaryen family’s civil war. The minute-long clip quickly shows us the new groups people are joining, more dragon fire, and a Westeros generally at war, and which is now much more troubled and wild.
What the season 3 preview tells us
The preview begins with Aemond Targaryen sitting on the Iron Throne; it’s a strong picture, coming after the very violent end to the last season. Queen Alicent Hightower leaves King’s Landing quietly, which may mean she is giving in, or is trying to make a deal to save herself. Rhaenyra is again a real danger, and is shown to have gotten more dragons to increase her power in the air. The video also hints at big fights on both water and land – with ships on fire, and dragons flying through the sky making huge cuts. One part seems to be a new version of the Battle of the Gullet, and has Jacaerys Targaryen and his dragon Vermax fighting ships which are loyal to House Velaryon. The preview mixes fighting up close with large views, meaning that both the size and the cruelty of the war are growing.
New dragons, and how the war is changing
A very noticeable moment is when a new dragon – Tessarion, the Blue Queen – is shown, and fans have identified her. Her speed and accuracy will probably change how fights in the air are done, and will be a problem for bigger, slower dragons like Vhagar. Tessarion’s arrival means Daeron Targaryen will be in the war, and will start a new fight in the Reach and Oldtown areas. Smaller dragons which can move quickly in battle could be useful for quick attacks and strikes against groups of ships and camps. These new dragons change how the sides can win. Dragons aren’t just things which cause fear; they are now important tools that can turn naval fights into fires, and make leaders have to think about where their supplies are coming from and how to defend the coasts.
The actors and people making the show
The main actors – Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, and Ewan Mitchell – are all back for season 3, and their characters will still be at the centre of the changing loyalties and increasing bloodshed in House Targaryen. New actors include James Norton as Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Tom Cullen, Joplin Sibtain, and Barry Sloane. These people add to the number of important families and military leaders now in the war. The directors for the season are Clare Kilner, Nina Lopez-Corrado, Andrij Parekh, and Loni Peristere. This suggests a season which will be visually impressive, with different directors’ styles being used for both big battle scenes and small, personal moments.
When it will come out, what fans think, and where the series is going
The people who made the show have said that season 3 will come out in June 2026, and will be the second-to-last part of a planned four-season story. The series follows the Targaryen history in George R R Martin’s Fire & Blood, and is moving towards a set end. People on social media and in fan groups reacted quickly to the preview, praising how big it was and the dramatic moments, but also being carefully hopeful after having mixed feelings about earlier episodes. Most excitement is about the promise of larger battles and the return of characters people have been waiting for.
What viewers should expect in season 3
You should expect a season which is darker and more energetic, and which looks at the details of how wars are supplied as much as the big events. Fights on water and in the air will have political results, and the new dragons will make commanders have to change quickly. The story seems to be getting closer to a historical end, with groups of people changing and trusted relationships breaking down. With dragons rising and the stakes getting higher, season 3 aims to make the Dance of the Dragons more intense, and to prepare for the final part of the story.
