Then there is the kind of promotion from Karan Johar that you can’t put a price on. He’s been touting the film as a Block a Buster and making no bones about its girl power. With Alia and Sharvari at the helm of this new chapter in the YRF Spy Universe, the trailer has done its job and the talk is on before we even get to release day.
You could feel the timelines move when Johar made sure to tag both Alia and Sharvari. Some weeks back, his take on the teaser left Sharvari out, and people were talking. Now the trailer is here and she is in full view; with this post, the director is making his support for the pair known.
Why Karan’s post matters
He put it out there when he put the trailer back up: ‘Get Set GO!!!! #ALPHA. This rock and roll actioner screams GIRLPOWER in the best way! @aliaabhatt and @sharvari are on a mission to Block a Buster!’ You have to like the way he put it.
And he didn’t stop there with the rest of the cast: ‘OG energy with @anilskapoor and @iambobbydeol! Shiv Rawail makes his bada screen debut with a BANG! Pave the way @yrf! You are the mega creator of this mazedaar universe!!!’ An unvarnished nod to the talent and the studio behind it all.
There is some history to it. He was all over the teaser before, but without a tag for Sharvari. Some fans saw a slight in that. The new material makes it plain she wasn’t in the mix then, so this feels like a well-timed correction.
Trailer flips fan theories
What we’re seeing in the fresh footage is a lot different from what was being put around. Bobby Deol isn’t Alia’s dad. He’s the one who took her as an infant, made her into a weapon, and now has to answer for it when he decides to make war on India.
Anil Kapoor is in there as the old pro to steady Sita and Sharvari’s character on a hot mission. It has a certain heft to it, the sort of story you want to see from them.
The trailer doesn’t leave much to the imagination:
– Bobby Deol is your bad guy
– Sita was taken and made to be a killer
– She is going to stand her ground against a threat to India
– And Sharvari is right there with her
Cast and cameos
Having Alia and Sharvari together says a lot. The clip is full of hard-nosed training and some good choreography, with Anil Kapoor as the mentor who holds it all together.
And if you have eyes in the back of your head, you might spot something that has people wondering if Hrithik Roshan is in the works. A couple of eyes is all it is, but in this world, it’s enough to let the cameo speculation run wild for a while.
Where Alpha sits in the Spy Universe
YRF has been ratcheting up the crossovers for some time. You had War and Pathaan put it on the map, and of course the whole thing started with Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. After the Tiger 3 and the upcoming War 2 with Hrithik, the scope has only gotten bigger.
Alpha is the first to be put in front of two women. Shiv Rawail is in the director’s chair and Aditya Chopra and Akshaye Widhani are producing. It is a move away from the usual hero worship, but they aren’t cutting any corners on the scale of it.
Release date and what to watch next
July 3 is the day. We will be looking at how well Alia and Sharvari work off each other, and if that cameo we were hinting at actually shows up.
If you are keeping up with it, these are the points to note:
– For once, the franchise is about the women
– Johar has given it a good push with the public
– The trailer is all about Sita’s comeuppance
Should the movie keep up with the trailer, you could say Alpha is the most daring thing they have done so far.
