PhonePe is really focused on how quickly businesses can begin to use the payment system. This new AI powered layer is supposed to get a business’s payment gateway running in minutes instead of weeks, and get to earning revenue faster by getting rid of complicated technical steps.
Merchant onboarding moves from bottleneck to differentiator
Getting a payment gateway working has generally been slow because developers have had to read a lot of instructions and then find and fix problems. PhonePe says this new system removes the need for a lot of specific technical skills. Instead of a lot of technical detail, businesses can connect to PhonePe through a simple, question and answer process.
The main benefit, PhonePe believes, is getting up and running quickly. Being able to start accepting payments and make money will happen much sooner.
Key features the company highlighted:
– From weeks to minutes for integration
– Conversational interface for developers
– Automated workflows with built-in error handling
– Adheres to API specs and correct payloads
Inside the AI layer
The system is designed to work with AI programs that help with coding, and it’s powered by PhonePe’s own “Integration Intelligence.” This agent doesn’t just make code, it understands how payments work. Tasks that used to take days of reading manuals and fixing errors can now be done in one go.
Rahul Chari, the Founder and Chief Technology Officer at PhonePe, says that by adding their “Integration Intelligence” to AI coding assistants, they have created a program that understands payments, not just generates code. He says this is only the beginning of PhonePe’s use of AI, and more exciting features are on the way.
Strategic bet on SMEs
PhonePe will begin using this new process with small and medium sized businesses. These businesses often don’t have a lot of resources, but are likely to grow rapidly, and a quick signup process will give them a significant advantage.
By automating the signup process, the tool is meant to remove the technical difficulties for smaller teams. PhonePe points out that it reduces the need for specialist technical skills, letting teams get from setting things up to actually using the system quickly.
Productivity and reliability gains
PhonePe says the system follows the rules for their payment gateway API (how different systems talk to each other), sends the correct information and uses standard processes. Included “best practices” are there to help with managing errors during the setup.
PhonePe also thinks programmers will be more productive. They will spend less time on the initial connection process and more time on improving the product itself.
Scale backdrop and what comes next
PhonePe was started in 2016. As of April 2026, they have over re 700 million registered customers and over 50 million businesses that accept PhonePe. They offer consumer payments, services for businesses, loans, insurance, and other platforms like Share.Market and the Indus Appstore.
PhonePe is presenting this launch as one of the first moves in a larger plan for using AI. They say more features are coming, and will continue to make connecting to their system easier while still following official rules.
For business owners, the point is simple: spend less time on setup and start making real transactions faster. For developers, it means fewer steps to do by hand and less jumping between different tasks, and all within a system that uses the normal API rules.
