Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian men’s cricket team on their strong win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, praising the discipline, resolve, and teamwork shown. India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final, keeping the title and starting celebrations in the country and amongst fans around the world.
PM Modi’s message and the reaction of national leaders
On X, the prime minister wrote: ‘By winning the T20 Cricket World Cup, Team India has shown that the combination of determination, control, and belief in yourself is the basic way to be successful in life.’ He had already said the win was ‘a proud moment for the nation’ and gave the players and staff his best wishes.
Other national leaders were also full of praise, with important people in government and ministers sending their congratulations to the team. Politicians of all kinds thanked the players for the happiness and international respect they had brought, and pointed out how sport can bring people together and show the world how sure India is of itself.

A great batting performance made a record total
After New Zealand chose to field, India scored 255 for 5 – the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final. The batting had both a willingness to attack and was very well carried out, putting the New Zealand bowlers under pressure from the start and giving them a very difficult score to chase.
Abhishek Sharma scored a quick 52 from 21 balls and put on 98 with Sanju Samson. Samson and Ishan Kishan then had a partnership of 100, with Kishan making 54 off 25 balls. Shivam Dube finished things off well with 26 not out from eight balls, making certain India went over 250.
The bowling which won the title
India’s bowlers did just as well, quickly destroying the New Zealand chase. Jasprit Bumrah was the best bowler with 4 for 15, taking important wickets that got rid of players who were settled and slowed the scoring.
Axar Patel helped with 3 for 23, and a careful bowling plan left New Zealand on 72 for 5. Tim Seifert fought back with 52 from 26 balls, and Mitchell Santner’s 43 briefly gave the side some hope. But in the end New Zealand were bowled out for 159, giving India a complete victory.
Important achievements and what this means for Indian cricket
The win meant India was the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, after wins in 2007 and 2024. It was also the first time a T20 World Cup title had been kept, and the first time the trophy had been lifted in India.
More than the records, the win shows how much cricket talent India has, and how well the long-term development of players is going. The performance will give the team more confidence in all types of cricket, and show that picking players who can change to what is needed, a good team, and a mix of experience and young players, was the right thing to do.

Public celebrations and what will happen next
Cities and towns were filled with celebrations as fans went into the streets and onto social media to praise the team. The victory had economic and cultural effects – from more interest in starting cricket at a young age, to new chances for the sport to make money in the country.
In the future, those who pick the team and the coaches will be expected to keep this going in all types of cricket. They will probably focus on finding and developing new talent, managing how much the players play, and using the success in T20 to make the team more stable in longer forms of the game, as cricket gets ready for coming series of matches between countries and world competitions.
The final – in which Suryakumar Yadav led a balanced and attacking Indian side – will be remembered for its energetic batting and strong bowling. With national leaders praising what the team had done, the win is both a sporting achievement and a sign of India becoming more and more important in world cricket.
