It was a short-lived but far-reaching problem for X on Monday. From one end of the region to the other, thousands were locked out or couldn’t make their feeds refresh. It didn’t take long for the numbers on Downdetector to jump as people put in tickets for the app, the website, and their timelines. Most of us are back in business, but the why of it is still a mystery and folks are looking for some clarity.
What users experienced
Some of you had a timeline that just wouldn’t budge or an app that refused to open. Then there were those who found the website unresponsive when they needed it to be.
If you look at the Downdetector figures, the grievances fall into a few categories:
– 45 percent had a hard time with the app
– 30 percent of you couldn’t get your feed or timeline to do its thing
– 15 percent ran into snags on the web
– A lot of talk about login and loading hiccups
How big was the disruption
The uptick was noisier than usual. Downdetector has more than 28,974 of you flagging issues after the reports started to pile up around 7 pm. It was a quick climb from where things were earlier in the day.
Take the US for example: as of 10:18 a.m. ET, there were over 9,800 of them, per the tracker. In the same stretch, Canada saw 1,300+ and the UK 1,400+ with the platform down at 10:16 and 10:18 a.m. respectively.
Downdetector puts together what it can from all sides and shows you what’s happening in the moment. They will be the first to tell you the real number of affected users may not be what the reports say.
Where and when it spiked
In India it was a case of sudden change. At 7:35 PM, Downdetector was showing close to 986 reports. Just a few minutes before, it was two. After being quiet for the most part, the complaints made a move and then let up.
Regional snapshots
Over in the U.S., the tracker put you at 73 at 7:09 PM and then you were off to the races until things wound down near 8. On a wider scale, we went from 336 to 968 in the space of three minutes, so you can see how fast this flared.
But for the most part, access was back to the way it should be. Once the hump was over, you could get on with it on X without any more of a fuss.
Why this matters for everyday users
When you count on X for the news, support, and what’s going on in your circles, even a little downtime is a nuisance. This was a flash in the pan, but it got at the heart of things – logging in, refreshing your feed – not some side feature.
With the app and timeline being the main complaint, it was the power users and creators who felt it the most. When a load fails or you miss a refresh, it can put a stop to a conversation or put you behind on an update.
What we still do not know
As for what set off Monday’s trouble, we have no idea. X hasn’t put out a word on it or said how they’re handling it. So we’re left to wonder if we’ll see this again and what they have in mind to keep it from happening.
The stats speak for themselves: a quick run-up in reports, a return to normal in most places, and a user base that is paying attention. We’ll be on the lookout for something from X and to see if they have any plans to put some heft back in the stability of the service.
