Air India Finalizes Compensation for AI-171 Crash Victims’ Families

Air India has successfully completed the compensation process as a gesture to the families affected due to the AI-171 crash last month, which took away 260 precious lives. The airline gave an interim relief package and created a trust for giving sorted-out compensation. Families are advised to seek lawyers' suggestions before agreeing to the final financial settlement that would read them waiving off any further rights.

The Air India families involved in the June 12, 2025 crash of the AI-171 flight are now engaged in final procedures of arrival, after already experiencing interim payments, in an attempt by the airline to provide some clarity and closure. This crash ended in 260 deaths, comprising of 241 victims who were providing the technical definition of passengers and the remaining innocent 19 people on the ground.

Background of the crash and interim relief

The AI-171 flights Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed after a short-lived journey from Ahmedabad. Immediate relief and coordinated support to the families were provided. Investigation officers hope to have an end-all report by the deadline on June 12, 2026.

Bereaved families started receiving interim ex gratia payments from Air India in the sum of twenty-five lakhs as interim measures while the framework of full and final compensation was being worked out. It was reported that Air India had closed most of its interim payments by December 2025. There were some exceptions, mainly due to pending documentation.

Structure of final compensation and trust funding

In line with industry norms and legal consideration, Air India has initiated the process of full and final settlement of compensation. The compensatory amounts range based on individual case dynamics in accordance with the approach of the law, but the airline is inviting participation in consideration of fair compensation.

A Memorial and Welfare Trust, by the name of Air-India-171 and setup specifically for the crash victims, is considering additional full and final compensation payments of a further amount of Rupees One Crore for each deceased family. It is proposed that both trust funds and airline payments together form the essence for the full and final settlements to be proposed to families in the structured compensation plan laid out.

Calculation of settlements

The airline has stated the importance of different methods for compiling an estimate of compensation to be assessed on a case by case basis. Contributing factors towards settlement figures are legal entitlements, former interim payouts, trust distributions, and family circumstances. In fact, some families have been given another financial offer after the initial Rs 25 lakh.

Air India clarifies that payments are made on a ‘full and final’ basis with the intent to bring closure. The settlement is structured in a way to settle into and to close direct financial liability of the airline in respect of unique cases in accordance with industry standards.

Legal Waivers, Advice, and Transparency

Relatives claiming the final sum would have to sign legal waivers representing they make no claim for compensation; or will not act legally when compensation is offered against Air India, together with any allied agents. These waivers will have a comprehensive reach, enabling one to release one’s claim against manufacturers, airport service providers, and governments.

The Airline urges for transparency and seeks to encourage those who would receive the final compensation to seek independent legal counsel prior to signing any document. It prefers to keep communication channels open to make it easier for bereaved families-to keep informed, deliberating upon their next step with necessary paperwork being processed as formalities.

Payments Processing and Other Administrative Steps

Almost every family has received an interim payment from Air India amounting to Rs. 25 lakhs; the officials said payments had been made to some 166 families while others would be going out soon. The balance of cases concern paperwork issues requiring resolution by Air India.

Once particulars for identity are fully understood and defamation claims are documented, the victims’ families will proceed with the final settlement process. The entire process initiated for harm by Air India has been portrayed in an empathetic manner, the relatives being led step-by-step towards speedy assistance.

The context, the investigation, and the future steps of the families

It will take a long time before any final conclusions can be drawn, as the official body of the accident investigation has begun to compile the crash details for a report that holds the power to impact legal and regulatory actions beyond that of the current trial; it is expected to be published within one year from the time of the crash and thus has the potential to make future suggestions or recommendations on policy and safety.

Given this, the airline reassures its dedication to assist the families affected and to responsibly deal in the settlements of the compensation. Choosing to accept a full and final settlement is, however, a difficult decision for the families; the legal process must be put into gear. The airline recommends that families seek competent and independent legal advice for an appropriate course of action.

Payment proposals and ongoing support are meant to bring a final conclusion as investigations are ongoing. For months to follow, the families and concerned parties will be particularly keenly waiting as payments are made and a final accident report is issued.
