Kapoor isn’t after your recall; he wants to put your head through the wringer. With the first teaser for India Ke Top 1% out in the open, the host makes his intentions plain: logic comes before anything else. Whether you are on JioHotstar or in front of the TV on Star Plus, this is about how you handle yourself when the heat is on.
Anil Kapoor’s teaser has other ideas about ‘bookish’ smarts
You see him in the promo coming out of a boardroom, done with the posturing of folks with fancy degrees. He has a bone to pick with the way easy questions get met with textbook responses. Then he sees the camera, walks right up to it and has a word with us.
He doesn’t mince words: in this show, a diploma won’t save you, but a good head will. ‘India’s Top 1 Percent’ is for the ones who can out-maneuver a situation, not the ones who have a syllabus down by heart.
Up the ante
The people behind the scenes say you’re going to be put on the spot with questions that require you to spot a pattern and make a move. It’s all about keeping your cool and being clear-headed, as opposed to what you’ve crammed.
Forget the old quiz show rules. This is made to put a premium on common sense and problem-solving. It’s about how you take in information and make a call in the moment when it counts.
Here is a run-down of what the teaser is telling us:
– Rote learning is out the window
– The harder you are pushed, the more you have to do
– Think fast and clean
– You can have a go at it from your couch, too
More than a pop quiz
It’s for everyone, no matter where you come from. You won’t be tested on the news or some bit of history like you might expect. The idea is to put you in a position where you have to trust your gut and your wits.
A global hit, with an Indian flavour
We are seeing the local version of The 1% Club here in India. It made its debut in the UK back in 2022 and has been on the move since. BBC Studios had 15 different territories on board as of earlier this year.
From the U.S. and Australia to France, Germany, Spain and beyond, it has been picked up in plenty of places. Endemol Shine India is the one making ours happen.
What Kapoor sees in it
For Kapoor, the show is a reflection of the Indian way of thinking: resourceful and quick. He puts it down to jugaad, a kind of superpower that gets you to the top of your game.
‘I’m not going to ask you the date of some treaty,’ he says. ‘This is to see how well your mind works when you are under a gun, with nothing but logic and common sense to go on. It’s a great equaliser.’ He is happy to be the face of something that puts our logical side on display.
He has been there and done that, having put in time with Bigg Boss OTT 3. And for Star Plus, this is in their wheelhouse. They have a history with shows like KBC, MasterChef, Nach Baliye, Kaun Banega Crorepati, and a whole list of others.
In the pipeline
Friday’s first look was a preview of a no-nonsense contest. We don’t have all the details yet, but the vibe is that if you can think on your toes, you have a shot.
There is no need to be a walking encyclopedia to keep up. If they deliver on what they are saying, India Ke Top 1% will be a must-watch when it comes to JioHotstar and Star Plus.
