Himachal Pradesh Earthquake: 5.0 Magnitude Shakes Chamba, No Major Damage Reported

Friday night in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, was shaken by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake. The tremors were strong enough to be felt for miles, but for the most part, it has been a case of no major damage or harm. It is a stark reminder of the seismic risks here and why the authorities are on top of things.

You could see people in Himachal Pradesh heading out of their homes on Friday as the ground moved under them. First reports had it as a 4.8 near Chamba. There was some back and forth with the numbers, but in the end, officials put the record straight: no one was hurt and there’s nothing to worry about in terms of destruction. They are asking everyone to keep an eye on things, given the area’s profile.

What we know so far

At first, you had a 4.8 with the epicentre some 55 km to the east of Chamba. Then the National Center for Seismology put the number at 5.0 for the 10:04 pm quake in the district, coming from a very shallow 5 km down.

The official word on the matter:

– 10:04 pm, according to the NCS.

– A 5.0 in Chamba.

– 5 km deep, they say.

– 4.8 was the early call, 55 kilometres out from Chamba.

– One figure even had it at 4.3 in the Dharamshala area.

As far as the authorities can tell, there has been no loss of life or property to speak of.

Where the tremors were strongest

It was hard to miss in Shimla, Kangra, Kullu and Chamba, and the jolt made its way into pockets of Punjab like Amritsar and Jalandhar. A lot of folks were quick to put some distance between themselves and their buildings and didn’t go back in until things settled down.

One in Dharamshala described it as frightening; when the shaking picked up, he said, you just get out. After the fact, the EMSC put out a map with some colour to show where people were feeling it and what kind of minor trouble they had.

Why the shaking felt intense

Seismologists will tell you that when a quake is this close to the surface, it has a way of being more of a shock. With this one at 5 km, you get a good deal of motion on the ground, which is what we heard about from all over on Friday.

Himachal is used to quakes in the 2 to 4 range, so this one was something else. You can see why people were in a hurry to leave and why there was some fear in the air.

A region on edge and the long memory of 1905

We are in a high risk zone, and Kangra is in Seismic Zone-5. This isn’t some old story – in 1905, a 7.8 in Kangra took 20,000 lives and levelled thousands of structures.

That kind of history is what drives us to be ready. Even if a quake doesn’t do much, it is a nudge to have your wits about you and for the authorities to make themselves known.

Impact, clarity and what comes next

It is not odd to see the numbers change in the first hour. Different networks, different ways of running the data. In the moment, you want to know the depth and what is actually happening on the ground.

So for the time being, the message from the top is to be on guard and wait for more. Since we don’t have any big problems to report, Friday’s event is a lesson in itself: in a place like this, being prepared is half the battle.
