Andaman Sea Earthquake: Seismic Activity and Safety Measures

A moderate earthquake with a strength of 5.4 hit the Andaman Sea and set off safety procedures for the area. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the people in charge are telling everyone to be careful and get ready for another one.

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, the National Center for Seismology said the earthquake in the Andaman Sea was 5.4. People in some parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands felt it shake, but as far as anyone knows right now, nothing was broken or nobody was injured.

The National Center for Seismology says the earthquake happened at 12:06 pm and was 90 kilometers deep. However, Chandra Bhushan Kumar, the main official for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, said that at 12:08 pm the same day an earthquake of 5.7 struck Mayabunder and Rangat in the north and middle of Andaman Island.

Emergency plans have been put into action, and the government is keeping a close watch on things in the Andaman Sea to protect everyone. For now, they are telling tourists and fishermen to stay on land and not go into the ocean.

Port Blair’s District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) says the earthquake started 96 kilometers north of Barren Island in the Andaman Sea. Barren Island has India’s only volcano that is still active, is about 140 kilometers from Port Blair, and is where the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates come together.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are within the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt, and therefore have earthquakes fairly often. This area frequently experiences quakes because it’s on a place where the tectonic plates bump into each other and move.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) gave details of the earthquake: its size (5.4), where it was (the Andaman Sea), its coordinates (12.49 N, 93.83 E), and how far down it was (90 kilometers). The German Research Centre for Geosciences thought it was even a little stronger, 6.07.

Last week there was a different earthquake in Leh that was 4.1 and 10 kilometers deep, and neither of these earthquakes caused much harm. The people in charge are continuing to watch the situation and will share any new information to keep people safe.

Since these areas continue to have seismic activity, learning about safety and following the directions of officials is very important for lowering the risk when these kinds of natural disasters occur. If you live in a place where earthquakes are common, you should learn the emergency procedures and have a plan for you and your neighbors.
