Reports say Gautam Gambhir has been seriously approached by one of the new investor groups with Rajasthan Royals. The offer – as it stands – would make him a partner, mentor, and the CEO, with a 2 to 3 per cent share in the team. Though, he isn’t able to accept it while he’s the India coach, because of the rules in place.
What the Rajasthan Royals have put forward
The offer looks complete, giving both leadership in strategy and a part of the ownership. The investor group want Gambhir to decide the way the cricket is played and the business side of things as CEO and mentor. A small share of the team would give him a proper say in how the team is worth and what decisions are made. Rajasthan Royals are currently changing owners; a number of shareholders are selling their shares to new investors, so the new owners need to quickly choose cricket people they trust to be in charge. The offer shows they want to have people who are good at the game, with influence in the offices.
The problem rules about conflicts of interest
Gambhir is at the moment the coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, with a contract that lasts until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rules, based on what the Lodha Committee said and accepted by the Supreme Court, stop anyone from being officially involved with the Indian team and an IPL team at the same time. These rules are there to stop problems with who is chosen for the team, how the team is managed, and business connections. Really, Gambhir would have to give up being India coach to take any official job with Rajasthan Royals. People close to Gambhir say he isn’t thinking about doing that at the moment.
What Gambhir has done in the IPL, and why teams want him
Since he stopped playing international cricket, Gambhir has done very well as a coach and mentor in the IPL. He was the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders when they won the league more than once, and later had a major mentoring job which helped the team win again. When he was a mentor at Lucknow Super Giants, the team got to the playoffs two years in a row. Teams want Gambhir because he makes tactics clear, is good with people, and is known for making a winning atmosphere in the changing room. These skills mean success in the game and that the team is attractive to companies – which probably explains why the investors are offering him a share and a job in charge.
How this could affect the team’s culture and how it works
A leader in charge with Gambhir’s cricket knowledge could affect who is brought into the team, how players are developed, and how the coaches are organised. He has experience of being a front-line coach and making plans for teams. For a team which is changing owners, that sort of steadiness and being seen as reliable is good. But the cost is clear: making Gambhir the CEO of a team would mean India would have to find a new coach before the big ICC events in 2027. That change would cause risk to who is chosen for the team, and how things continue with the national side.
What is most important now the T20 World Cup 2026 and the 2027 plan
Gambhir has said – publicly and privately – that he is completely committed to Team India, especially during the 2026 T20 World Cup. India got to the Super-8 stage with some good group results, and Gambhir is still concentrating on short-term goals and getting the team ready for the tournament. His contract with the country lasts until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which sets the time when he could really move to a team. Only after that contract ends could Gambhir legally and in a good way think about taking a job in charge with an IPL team, without breaking the rules about conflicts of interest. Gambhir’s choice will involve what he wants to do in the game, the rules which stop him, and when things happen. At the moment, the job of coach and the big ICC events coming up are keeping his attention on the national team, while the offer from Rajasthan Royals is a big chance for after 2027.
