Vijayan’s strong words came because of something Rahul Gandhi said. Gandhi had said that the central government’s investigators have questioned or arrested a lot of people who are against the government, but they haven’t done that to the Kerala Chief Minister. Vijayan used this as a chance to attack the Congress politically and defend his own party’s actions.
Context of the ‘B-team’ Accusation
Vijayan said that the Congress is, in effect, helping the BJP by not really fighting against what the BJP is doing. He believes they are playing a smaller, supporting role instead of actively opposing the party that is currently in power.
The CPI(M)-led LDF (Vijayan’s government) is completely against all forms of politics based on religion, Vijayan explained. His government doesn’t need or want the support of groups that focus on the interests of either the majority or the minority religions. This is different from what he says the Congress does, and he thinks they are trying to get support from those religious groups.
Accusations of Appeasement and Communal Outreach
Vijayan directly accused the Congress of "appeasement politics“, meaning they are seeking support from groups that emphasize religious identity. He believes this weakens politics based on being secular and on social class, and it takes attention away from the important work of governing, such as improving things for people and providing public services.
The point of saying all this is to make the election about deeply held beliefs. By saying the Congress is trying to please certain groups, Vijayan wants to show that the LDF is the one that always defends being secular, and that the Congress is tainted and not strong enough to oppose the BJP.
Sabarimala Gold Loss and Legal Oversight
Regarding the issue of gold that went missing at Sabarimala, Vijayan said the Kerala High Court is watching the investigation and hasn’t said anything is wrong with how it’s being done. The government has been very clear that if anyone is found to be involved, they will be punished, and this is to respond to what the opposition parties are saying.
Vijayan doesn’t think the CPI(M) will be harmed politically by this Sabarimala situation. He thinks the fact that the court is still looking into it and the government’s statement about punishment will stop the opposition from being able to criticize them, especially now that the April 9th election is approaching.
Higher Education Reforms and Centre-State Tensions
Vijayan pointed to the recent improvements to higher education in Kerala. He said the state has been working to raise the quality of its colleges and universities to match international standards. He is presenting these changes as part of the overall record of his government that the LDF will present to voters during the campaign.
However, he also says the central government has been unfriendly about several things. Vijayan mentioned disagreements about money for rebuilding Wayanad (an area that was damaged), and he criticized what the BJP leader in Kerala said about how much help the central government is giving to Kerala, calling it “nonsense”. He sees both political and financial problems in these issues.
Implications for the Assembly Polls and Political Debate
This back-and-forth between Vijayan and the Congress is part of a larger battle as the election gets closer. Saying that another party is unofficially helping the BJP can influence what voters think and what the campaign focuses on, especially concerning secularism and how the government is run.
In the end, voters will consider the different claims about the police, investigations into corruption, how much development has happened, and politics involving religion. Vijayan’s statements are designed to get people to support the LDF by emphasizing what the government has done, the changes to education, and a firm position against organizing based on religion. The election in April will show if voters agree with this approach.
