This is the first clear look at a test version of the Baleno that’s going to be updated mid-life. Though it’s covered in a lot of camouflage, you can still see important parts of the design, that the equipment inside is being changed, and that the engine will likely be more fuel-efficient. It’s a popular hatchback and this suggests improvements.
Exterior design updates and styling cues
The basic shape of the Baleno doesn’t appear to be changing, but the front of the car will have a new look. Pictures from spies show a grille that’s been reshaped and a new bumper for the front of the car giving it a tidier, more up-to-date appearance.
The headlights seem to still have projector LED lights and the boomerang-shaped daytime running lights, and the back lights may get a very subtle update using a pixel style. We can also expect new designs for the wheels (probably around 16 inches) and smaller adjustments like a slightly altered rear bumper and roof spoiler to make the sides of the hatchback look a bit better.
Interior changes and comfort upgrades
Looking at the inside, the dashboard is mostly the same as now, including the angled air conditioning vents and the three-spoke steering wheel. This means the main layout will stay the same to keep costs down and to ensure everything is still in a convenient place.
However, Maruti Suzuki might use a new colour scheme for the interior and better materials for the seats and trim. People buying the car could find a bigger touchscreen, cooling for the front seats, lighting you can change the colour of, and generally softer surfaces. These would all make the interior feel as good as the competition.
Features and technology expected
The new technology will be about making the car more comfortable and convenient. It will likely have a larger screen for information and entertainment, will continue to have regular dials with a coloured information display, and will keep the head-up display.
The Baleno’s update could include extras like a sunroof (on the higher-spec versions), better ambient lighting, and more ways to connect your devices. These features will make it more like its competitors that already have lots of nice things in the cabin.
Safety and driver assistance enhancements
Testing of the Baleno has included the hardware for Level t2 ADAS, meaning it’s likely the updated hatchback will have more advanced driver assistance systems. Level 2 ADAS includes things like adaptive cruise control (which automatically adjusts speed to the car in front), lane keeping assist (which helps you stay in your lane) and automatic emergency braking.
The usual safety features will continue, including multiple airbags, ABS with EBD (anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution) and stability control. And if Level 2 ADAS is included, it would put the Baleno in a good position amongst smaller cars with semi-self-driving abilities.
Powertrain options and fuel efficiency focus
The engine is likely to still have the 1.2 litre petrol and CNG (compressed natural gas) options as before. The current 1.2 litre Dual VVT petrol engine makes approximately 90 horsepower and 113 Nm of torque and comes with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox.
The biggest change to the engine could be a new 1.2 litre, three-cylinder Z-series petrol engine and a hybrid version. The hybrid would combine the petrol engine with an electric motor powered by a battery. The aim of this hybrid setup is to use less fuel and make fewer emissions, while still letting you choose the transmission you like.
Launch timing and market positioning
Because they are testing a camouflaged version, it’s likely the 2026 Baleno will be released in India before the end of the year. The price will probably go up a little to reflect the new features and the potential hybrid engine, but Maruti Suzuki will try to keep the Baleno at a good price in the premium hatchback market.
Compared to competitors that have sunroofs and mood lighting, the updated Baleno will focus on giving you good value for your money, being fuel-efficient and comfortable. It will have different ‘trims’ or versions, which will keep the basic model affordable, and add more luxury features to the more expensive ones.
Essentially, the 2026 Baleno update will be a gradual improvement: the styling will be a bit better, the materials inside will be of higher quality, it will have more technology, and will probably have a hybrid engine option. These changes should make the hatchback remain a good choice in a market that is changing rapidly.
