Anurag Basu praises Ranbir Kapoor’s bold portrayal of Lord Rama in Ramayana

When Ranbir Kapoor's first picture as Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana was shown (after being shown to a small group in Los Angeles, it was at an event in Mumbai), it started a lot of discussion. Some of his fans loved the image of a strong, royal warrior, but others weren't sure Ranbir could play the calm, classic hero. Director Anurag Basu was very complimentary.

Basu, who previously directed Ranbir in Barfi! and Jagga Jasoos, said Ranbir looked ‘amazingly good’ as Rama. He said the picture is exactly how he pictured Ranbir when he agreed to be in the film, and he complimented Ranbir for being willing to take on the role.

Anurag Basu applauds Ranbir’s transformation

Basu explained that acting as Rama isn’t just about what you wear, it’s a very difficult and serious acting challenge. He thinks Ranbir being willing to do it was courageous, because in the film industry, actors are usually seen in particular types of roles, and it takes a lot of bravery to go against that.

The short video clip of the film shows Ranbir in very fancy, kingly clothes that show both his strength as a warrior and his peaceful dignity. The gold jewelry and his calm expression are meant to show Rama as both a perfect god and a human being, both a leader and someone who has been banished from his kingdom.

Details of the Lord Rama look and its intent

The people making the film have used a lot of contrasts in what things look like: huge, impressive palaces and armor for fighting, alongside quiet, thoughtful closeups of Ranbir. It seems the filmmakers want a Rama who people will respect, but one who still has a kind and understandable personality.

As you’d expect with someone being cast in a way that goes against tradition, people had different reactions to the video. A lot of people liked the peaceful feeling and unique style Ranbir is bringing to the role, but some still aren’t sure he’s right for a character who is usually seen as very calm.

How audiences reacted to the teaser

The video also showed a lot of computer-created images, including the kingdoms of Lanka and Ayodhya, and the time Rama spent living in the forest after being exiled. Viewers said the demons (asuras) looked like creatures from The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, and this led to more discussion about how the computer effects are being done and how big the scale of them is.

Ranbir apparently wasn’t sure about accepting the part at first, as he was worried he wouldn’t be able to do the role justice. But having his daughter Raha changed how he felt and gave him the confidence to go for it.

Why taking Ramayana was a courageous move for Ranbir Kapoor

Taking on a part as huge as this means lots of attention from fans, high expectations, and people comparing him to how others have played Rama in the past. But Basu saying good things about Ranbir shows that in the film industry more actors are willing to try roles that aren’t what people expect, and to be in big, risky films.

Nitesh Tiwari is directing Ramayana, and Namit Malhotra and Yash are producing it, and it will come out in two parts. The first part is scheduled for Diwali 2026 and the second for Diwali 2027.

What the film promises and the release plan

The film has a very famous cast: Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Arun Govil as King Dashrath, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. It’s said to cost 4,000 crore, which makes it one of the biggest and most expensive Indian films ever made.

Both people who are looking forward to the film and those who are unsure will be paying close attention to more clips and pictures as they are released. Anurag Basu’s positive comments are important, but people won’t really know what to think until they see Ranbir’s full performance in the theater.

Regardless of how you feel about it, Ramayana will be visually impressive, will cause discussion, and will offer a new way of looking at a story that is hundreds of years old. Basu thinks Ranbir’s chance is likely to be successful, and as Diwali 2026 gets closer, more and more people will become excited about it.
