The BCCI wants Bumrah to be in all nine of India’s remaining WTC Tests, and his schedule will be built around that. Because India is sixth in the WTC, the people choosing the team think Bumrah is essential for improvement. People with knowledge of the planning say that Test matches will be given priority over some ODIs to keep him in good condition.
BCCI’s Test-first plan for Bumrah
The main aim right now is to have Bumrah healthy enough to play in all the remaining WTC games, people in the know have said. He’s likely to play four Tests away from home in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, then five Tests at home against Australia at the beginning of next year.
Even though Bumrah is playing in the IPL at the moment, the team management and selectors are making plans based on that future schedule. A report says the selectors won’t hesitate to rest him from some ODI series if they need to, to make sure he’s available for Tests.
Why the stakes are high in the WTC
India’s WTC campaign needs to gain speed and Bumrah’s effect with the red ball (used in Tests) is expected to be the deciding factor. Getting their WTC chances back on track is the priority this year, even though they are also thinking about the next ODI World Cup.
Tests are being emphasized because there are a lot of games and not much time between them. The amount of bowling he will do and the time he has to recover, especially for the Australian series at home, are seen as the biggest difficulties.
Managing workloads across formats
Those planning things think the best way to ensure Bumrah is ready to play is to control how much he plays in white-ball cricket (ODIs and T20s). He came back to T20s after a two-year break during the Asia Cup last September and still did well, they point out.
Ideally, they’d like him to play few T20Is, as the next big T20 event isn’t for two years. How he’s selected will be guided by keeping him as fit as possible, and choices will be made depending on how important a series is and how much time he needs to recover.
Sources indicate these are the priorities for managing his workload:
– He will play all nine remaining WTC Tests.
– He will be rested from some ODI series if needed.
– He will play a very limited number of T20Is in the next period.
– A final decision on the Test against Afghanistan will be made after the IPL.
Last year Bumrah said he was available for three of the five Tests in England, and then played in all four Tests at home. Now, those in the know say he’s expected to play whenever the medical team say he’s truly fit.
Afghanistan Test and selection decisions
India has a single Test match against Afghanistan starting June 6th, but it isn’t part of the WTC. A report earlier this week said the main players might be rested for this match as it is so close to the end of the IPL.
The report also says these players may then be back for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan that follows. The final decision will be made towards the end of the IPL after they’ve looked at how much each player has been doing.
The selectors have also said that the main Test players should be available for Test cricket if they are fit. They want to really focus on Tests and use every chance to get match practice.
Shubman Gill, who is the captain of both India’s Test and ODI teams, has said they need more time to get ready before important Test series. This opinion supports the board’s attempt to protect players’ time and fitness for the final part of the WTC and the tough series against Australia.
How India will play the different types of cricket, how much rest the players will get, and how they will look after their fast bowlers will be decided in the next few weeks. The plan for the WTC is simple: to keep Jasprit Bumrah fit, well-rested, and leading the bowling attack in all nine Tests.
