The window for the iPhone 18 Pro is closing in on early September. All signs point to a steeper price tag and a no-nonsense emphasis on what’s under the hood: performance, AI and the camera. In India, the numbers are straightforward – if the analysts are right, the base Pro will be the first to go over Rs 1.5 lakh.
Launch timing takes shape
Mark Gurman at Bloomberg says Apple will do what it always does and roll out the new phones on the first Tuesday or Wednesday post-Labor Day. You could make a case for September 8, but the 9th is just as likely.
Then again, Apple has a habit of leaving a day after Labor Day (September 7) before they hold court, so September 9 is a strong contender. Put it all together and you can count on the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max being here in the first half of September 2026.
Price strategy and India impact
Everyone is expecting the Pro to be more of an investment this time around. IDC is putting the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max at $200 above the last generation. “My gut tells me we may be in for even more than we thought, maybe a $200 bump for the Pro and Pro Max,” says Navkendar Singh, IDC India’s vice president. “I’d say we’re done with the $50 kind of increases.”
In the US, that would put the 18 Pro in the $1,249 to $1,299 range and the 18 Pro Max from $1,349 to $1,399. Over in India, you can expect the base Pro to top the Rs 1.5 lakh line.
There is some context to it. Apple has already hiked the cost of some Macs and iPads to offset the price of parts like memory. A move like that with the Pro iPhones is a way for them to keep their margins intact and let the features do the talking.
Performance-first upgrades over redesign
If there’s a theme to this year, it’s that you’ll see more in the way of substance than style. Word on the street is that the iPhone 18 Pro will be powered by an A20 Pro chip from TSMC’s 2nm process. The goal is to put more speed in your hands, along with longer battery life and some of the most robust on-device AI we’ve seen.
Then there are the specs: 12GB of RAM and iOS 27 with a host of Apple Intelligence upgrades. You can expect a Siri that’s more of a conversationalist, plus better onscreen smarts and a deeper understanding of your personal context. A new C2 modem should also be on board for all the usual reasons-stronger signal, less drain, and maybe even some satellite capabilities you haven’t had before.
As for looks, we may see a slimmer Dynamic Island if Apple tucks some of the Face ID hardware under the screen. They’ve been alluding to under-display Face ID, but whether it’s ready for this year is anyone’s guess. The displays will be the same 6.3- and 6.9-inch sizes for the Pro and Pro Max, but with a more frugal LTPO+ panel.
The cameras are where the story is. We’ll likely have the same three 48-megapixel lenses in back, but the main one could be fitted with a mechanical variable aperture for cleaner low-light shots and more lifelike portraits. There are also whispers of a new stacked sensor, a telephoto with a bit more oomph and a front camera with higher res.
All that efficiency from the A20 Pro should do wonders for the battery, and the Pro Max might even get a bigger one. And in a move to streamline things, the Camera Control button is said to be losing its capacitive layer while still being pressure-sensitive.
If you like a pop of colour, Dark Cherry is the one to watch, with Light Blue, Dark Grey and Silver as options.
What to expect at the event
September will be all about the Pros. Some have it in their heads that we might also be introduced to a foldable ‘iPhone Ultra’ at the same time.
There’s a change of plans for the non-Pro handsets, though. The standard 18 and the 18e are being pushed to spring 2027, which lets Apple have the field to itself with the Pro models come the holidays.
When to mark your calendar
Gurman is of the opinion that if they go with a midweek date, things will move quickly. An event on the 9th? Pre-orders could be up the next day, with phones in stores later on.
Here’s what the reports are saying:
– An event is in the offing for Sept. 8 or 9
– A little breathing room around Labor Day (Sept. 7)
– Pre-orders to follow on the 10th
Take it with a grain of salt; Apple hasn’t put any of this in writing. It’s all from the usual mix of leakers and analysts. But the trend is hard to miss: an early September show, a focus on raw power and AI, and a Pro series that will probably set you back a bit more in the US and India.
