Chennai Weather: Heat, Thunderstorms, and Heavy Rain Alerts for Tamil Nadu

You can have some of both in Chennai today: the kind of heat that lingers and the odd thunderstorm. There are heavy rain alerts for Tamil Nadu, and the IMD has put out word to a number of districts to make sure you're in the know. Be ready for the weather to turn on a dime, with some wind and scattered storms in the offing.

It’s a bit of a split-screen affair in the city. You have the bite of the heat and skies that don’t look too friendly. Between the IMD’s thunderstorm calls and a heavy rain warning for parts of the state on 16th June – not to mention what RMC is saying about 15 June 2026 – there’s no room for haphazard planning if you are on the move.

The southwest monsoon is in the news again. We had a lull, but now the thermometer is up in Tamil Nadu, and it’s making for some stormy afternoons and evenings where even the power grid has to put in some work.

Monsoon-fuelled alerts for Tamil Nadu on 15 June

Over in the Regional Meteorological Centre they are calling for some moderate rain, thunder and 50 kmph gusts in places like Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Namakkal and Salem this Monday. You might get an on-and-off shower, but the bottom line is to watch the sky and the numbers.

Then comes Tuesday and the weather department has upped the ante for a few more districts. We could be in for some hard rain and wind. It’s one of those days when you have to be on your toes; things can go from a humid stillness to a loud downpour in no time.

Quick official alerts

This is what the authorities are putting out there:

– A round of thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal per the IMD

– Theni is under a heavy rain alert

– Some areas may see 40-50 kmph of wind

– RMC is on to some 50 kmph gusts in the interior

Chennai today: hot, cloudy, and a tease of rain

On 15 June 2026, the city is partly overcast with a chance of some light, patchy rain. Don’t let the clouds fool you into thinking it’s cool, though. We are looking at a high of 39C or so.

Humidity is what makes it tough. The moment the sky goes grey, it gets muggy. Right now we are at 33 degrees with 64% in the air, which has a way of feeling like 42. The 8 mph westerlies don’t do much to put you at ease.

We’ve had a couple of easier days, but Sunday was a different story. Nagapattinam was top of the list at 40C, Madurai was 39.5, and Trichy was right there with it. It’s the sort of stickiness that sets you up for a storm come evening.

Tuesday outlook: who faces heavier rain

IMD is on record to say that a long list including Namakkal, Salem, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, among others, should brace for it on Tuesday. Ramanathapuram, in particular, is in for a rougher stretch with some phasing in of heavy rain and wind.

For us in Chennai, Tuesday is going to be a bit of a tempest. 36 and 29C with a 50/50 on rain and some scattered thunder. By 18th June you can be more sure of it: 36 and 28C with a 65% shot of a shower and a storm or two.

If you are looking at the weekend, mark your calendar for some wet time. 21st June has 35 and 29C with a 60% chance of rain. We are talking more in the way of quick, hard bursts than a day of being drenched.

Why it matters and what to do next

Sultry then stormy – it’s how the monsoon works. If you are in the office or making deliveries, the when is as important as the how much, particularly with 40-50 kmph winds in some spots.

The powers that be are telling folks in the affected areas to be prepared. In plain English: have a look at the radar, don’t be surprised by a sudden gale, and give yourself some leeway with the commute once you see the thunderheads forming.

From the coast in to the back country, it’s all about these fast-moving cells rather than one great deluge. One minute it’s quiet in the middle of the day, the next it’s a racket at 6. Have your gear with you, make sure your phone is charged, and let the forecast be your guide.
