The heavy rain in Kerala isn’t going to let up. The IMD says four districts are under an orange alert, and many others have yellow alerts for the next five days. Some areas will likely have thunderstorms and winds as high as 50 kilometers per hour, so it’s really important to pay attention to the official weather reports.
Orange alert and thunderstorm risk
From 2:30 to 5:30 pm on Saturday, the IMD had an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki and Malappuram. An orange alert means extremely heavy rain – between 11 and 20 centimeters.
The IMD also said those areas will have thunderstorms with winds up to 50 kph. Earlier this week, the IMD predicted rain with lightning and 40-50 kph winds in parts of Kerala until May 3rd, meaning the unstable weather will continue throughout the weekend.
High UV levels raise parallel concern
While the rain clouds were forming, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) reported that UV radiation was high until 1 pm on Saturday. In Konni (Pathanamthitta) and Munnar (Idukki) the UV reached eight or higher, which is an orange alert.
Nine places around the state had UV levels between six and seven, which is a yellow alert. These readings show that Kerala is having very strong sun alongside the sudden showers.
Five-day outlook and yellow alerts
The IMD’s newest report for the next five days has yellow alerts for several districts. A yellow alert means there’s a chance of heavy rain in some places, and heavy rain is 7 to 11 centimeters in a 24-hour period.
Here are the district-wise yellow alerts announced by the IMD:
– May 2 (Saturday): Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram
– May 3 (Sunday): Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki
– May 4 (Monday): Idukki, Palakkad
– May 5 (Tuesday): Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad
– May 6 (Wednesday): Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Wayanad
Why this matters and what comes next
The combined warnings for very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds show that the weather in any one place can change very quickly. The IMD alerts are meant to help people in the districts most likely to get a lot of rain to take care of themselves.
The IMD says the weather will be unsettled all weekend and storms are possible in various locations. People who live in Kerala and those traveling should check the IMD and KSDMA for updates and adjust their plans depending on how the weather is doing.
Because of both the rain and the high UV levels, daily life might involve quickly switching between sunshine and heavy downpours. Think about the breaks in the weather when you’re planning what to do, and follow official advice as Kerala gets through this period of intense weather.
