The Election Commission made this decision after looking at how prepared West Bengal is for the election and officially told the officers to take their new jobs. The order, given on Wednesday, names the DIGs for specific areas and says they must begin their work immediately and have a report confirming they’ve started by releasing it by 11 am on March 19. This shows the Commission wants all administrative details finalized well before people start voting.
EC Orders Five DIG Postings Across West Bengal
Rathod Amitkumar Bharat will be the DIG for Raiganj, and Ajeet Singh Yadav will be in charge of Murshidabad. Shrihari Pandey is going to Bardhaman as DIG, Kankar Prosad Barui will be the DIG for the Presidency Range, and Anjali Singh is the new DIG of Jalpaiguri.
This is a bigger effort to strengthen how the election is managed as West Bengal’s voting will happen in two parts, on April 23 and April 29, with the votes being counted on May 4. Again, the Election Commission is stressing fairness and being ready to go.
Background and Immediate Compliance Requirements
The Commission’s order says the officers should start their positions right away and a report confirming they’ve done so is due by 11 am on March 19. This shows they are determined to have the administrative side of things settled before the voting begins.
These DIG appointments are happening after an initial round of changes and removals after the “model code of conduct” went into effect (this is a set of rules that are followed to make elections fair). The Election Commission had already moved the state’s chief secretary and home secretary and removed some high-ranking police officials to ensure the election is fair.
Profiles of the Newly Appointed DIGs
Rathod Amitkumar Bharat used to be the DIG in charge of state traffic. His experience with moving lots of people and things around could be useful for getting election staff and materials safely where they need to be.
Ajeet Singh Yadav was a superintendent of police for election work in the state’s DEO (District Electoral Officer) office. He has direct experience with how elections are run at the district level and helping voters.
Shrihari Pandey used to work in the Intelligence Branch in North Bengal, so he’s good at investigations and coordinating intelligence, and he’ll bring those skills to Bardhaman. Kankar Prosad Barui was previously the DIG of Prisons which is about managing prisoners and planning security. Anjali Singh was a DIG for traffic, and her operational experience will be useful in Jalpaiguri.
Wider Bureaucratic and Police Reshuffle Ahead of Elections
Along with these five DIGs, the Election Commission has made many other changes at the highest levels of the government and police. They have appointed a new chief secretary, a new home secretary, and people to temporarily lead the state police, Kolkata police, and the law and order departments.
Changes at the very top of the police include a new Director General for the state and a new Commissioner for Kolkata Police. This is normal when the model code of conduct is in effect; it’s to avoid any appearance of bias and make sure the law is applied fairly during the election.
Implications for Poll Preparedness and Local Administration
The goal of replacing top officials and assigning new DIGs is to build an administration that won’t take sides during the election. These changes should improve how the Election Commission, the state government, and the police work together, especially regarding security, controlling crowds, and making sure the election is honest.
People who are watching the election point out that 13 new district magistrates (who will also be the district election officials) have been assigned. Coordinating the government and police at the district and range levels is meant to make decisions quicker and make sure election rules are enforced in the same way everywhere.
The Election Commission’s actions show they are being very careful when managing a large election in a state. Now that the dates to start the jobs and to confirm they’ve started are set, the focus is on carrying out the plan and running the election fairly in West Bengal.
