The Commission asked the police to arrest Badshah after he didn’t come to a meeting about what some people thought was wrong with the content in his Haryanvi video ‘Tateeree’. The Commission believes both the video and the words in the song insult the daughters of Haryana, and that someone must be held responsible.
What ‘Tateeree’ is About
The problem started when the Haryanvi music video ‘Tateeree’ came out, and people right away said bad things about the words and pictures in it. People who complained said the video used bad language and showed young girls in school clothes in a way which gave a bad idea of what school is for, and was bad to women.
Groups of local people and people who fight for what is right filed complaints and lawsuits, saying the video hurt the feelings of the community. The State Commission for Women then sent Badshah an official message asking him to explain the material which people thought was rude.
The Commission’s Request and Order to Arrest
The Commission, with Renu Bhatia as leader, sent Badshah a notice on March 6th, telling him to be in Panipat by 3 PM on a certain date. The Commission says he didn’t come, so they asked for action to be taken right away.
Bhatia told the chief of police in Panipat to arrest Badshah ‘anywhere and everywhere’ and asked for orders to search his property. She also asked people in charge to take Badshah’s passport, so he couldn’t leave the country while the police looked into things.
Legal Action and FIRs
Police have made First Information Reports in Panchkula and Jind, saying there were problems with the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act of 1986 and Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The FIRs mention rude words and pictures which included children, and rude things said about schools.
People are saying that police are putting together several groups to carry out search and arrest orders, and are getting a look-out circular to make sure Badshah stays in India. The investigation is still going on, and police say they will do more depending on what they find.
What Badshah Said and His Lawyers
Because of the trouble, Badshah put a video apology on social media, and said he was sorry if the song had offended anyone. He also said the video had been taken off of the internet while the issue was being dealt with.
His lawyers said they had asked for more time to come to the Commission, and said the official order hadn’t arrived in time. Lawyers for him handed in a letter saying they had permission, and asked for a video meeting or more time – requests the Commission is said to have turned down.
What Happens Next and What It Means
This case shows the problems between being able to make art and what people in a community think is right. People in charge will look at what the words and pictures mean and how they fit with the law, and also think about protecting children and what the public thinks.
If Badshah is arrested, the legal process could involve meetings about rude pictures and trouble with public order, and may change how people who make things and the places which put them on the internet deal with content in local languages. People who watch what is going on say the claims haven’t been proven until courts or groups with the power to do so make a final decision.
Officials have asked other groups to work together on bans or restrictions and to watch shows all over the country. For now, the situation is changing as police search, lawyers get ready to defend, and the Commission follows the law.
The investigation into ‘Tateeree’ continues, and there will probably be legal and cultural debates as people who have a part in it think about being held responsible, being free to say what you think, and protecting young people.
