IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Sets New Record for Most Runs by a Teenager

You can put it down to 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi of the Rajasthan Royals for a new world record. With 581 runs in IPL 2026, he has left the old teenage T20 series mark in the dust. The way he put on a show against Mumbai Indians is a case in point for what he's made of and where young cricketers are heading.

IPL 2026 has been redefined by a kid. When Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the RR opener, put up 581 in his 14th game, he broke the world record for a teenager in a T20 series right there at Wankhede in the MI-RR clash. It was an early moment in his innings that changed the story of the season in an instant.

Up against Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians in their final league tie, Sooryavanshi put Devdutt Padikkal’s 580 behind him. More than a stat, it’s a statement from a 15-year-old who has the poise and nerve to carry a batting line-up with its eyes on the title.

Two balls that made the difference

He was two away from it. That was the math in front of a full house at Wankhede. Sooryavanshi put one on the board with his first delivery, then on the second ball of the second over, he put Will Jacks on the back foot and had his 581.

Not much to look at, but it meant everything. In a year of hard-hitting and even harder stories, you could see the kind of head he has under pressure in those two quiet moments.

The significance of it all

He is the top run-scorer for RR this year and has hit more sixes in the league than anyone (53). He also made history in the last game as the first Indian to clear 50 in a T20 series.

For a team that likes to be aggressive from the word go, the lefty’s steadiness is what has made or broken them. He has provided a winning formula for RR and made them a threat in any chase or when they have to defend.

Chasing 600 and the Gayle standard

And there is still more to come. Put 21 on in this one and he is the first teen to 600 in a T20 series. A number that used to be unattainable for his age group is now just a night’s work away.

Then you have the sixes. Chris Gayle's 59 in 2012 is still the one to beat. Sooryavanshi is on 53; seven more will do it.

581: redefining what a teen can do

Padikkal had 580 for Karnataka in the 2019/20 SMAT and we thought that was as good as it gets. Sooryavanshi’s 581 has put a new bar in place for batters his age, no matter the league or the conditions.

Until now, these were the numbers you looked at:
– Devdutt Padikkal: 580 for Karnataka, SMAT 2019/20.
– Tilak Varma: 397 for Mumbai Indians, IPL 2022.
– Lhuan-dre Pretorius: 397 for Paarl Royals, SA20 2024/25.
– Will Smeed: 385 for Somerset, Vitality Blast 2021.
– Gustav Mckeon: 377 for France, Europe Qualifier 2022.
– Rishabh Pant: 366 for Delhi Capitals, IPL 2017.
– Yash Dhull: 363 for Delhi, SMAT 2022/23.
– James Vince: 353 for Hampshire, Friends Provident t20 2010.
– Prithvi Shaw: 353 for Delhi Capitals, IPL 2019.

Look at the variety of the field. Whether it’s a domestic cup or a franchise side, the totals for a 15-year-old usually levelled off before they got to where Padikkal was. Sooryavanshi has moved that goalpost for the rest of them.

MI vs RR: a stage for some

Wankhede gave us the drama and the importance. To face the home crowd and the Mumbai Indians is something, but Sooryavanshi kept it simple, with good timing and power.

The left-hander from Samastipur has been more than a prospect in 14 games. He is the one setting the tone for RR with a mix of skill and no-nonsense cricket that makes for a good headline.

What is in store

With the playoffs around the corner, you have to watch two things: if he can make it to 600 and whether he can get to Gayle’s 59 sixes in a season. Either would make for a historic run.

For the time being, 581 is the figure. It came from two very cool-headed deliveries in Mumbai, in a season where a 15-year-old has shown the way for the men around him.
