You could say the decision has put an end to some of the speculation over the last few weeks. The go-ahead comes on the heels of a hamstring review in Bengaluru, and it couldn’t have come at a better time with the three-match affair against AFG on the horizon.
Fitness clearance at BCCI CoE
He was told to make his way to the Centre of Excellence for a week to be put through his paces. What they were after was an honest read on the right-hander’s hamstring, the very thing that put a stop to his run in the 2026 IPL.
Word came down on June 9 (13:46 IST) that he was good to go, and with it the ‘subject to fitness’ caveat from his selection last month has been done away with. For the team, it takes the guesswork out of the opening pair.
Here’s what you need to know:
– All set following the CoE assessment
– First of the IND vs AFG ODIs is June 13
– A three-game series
– Five IPL 2026 games on the sidelines
Why this is important for both
It’s not just a box-ticking exercise. You’re 39, and if you want to be in the reckoning for 2027, you have to be there. Time off gives your competition an opening to put forward their case for the job.
The selectors, with Ajit Agarkar in charge, have made it plain they won’t coddle anyone – look at what happened with Suryakumar Yadav and the T20I captaincy. Rohit has earned some leeway since hanging up his T20 and Test caps, but when it comes to the 50s, he has to show he can do it.
How we got here
It goes back to the 2026 IPL. He was batting against RCB and felt the hamstring, so he retired hurt and never went back in. He was out for five straight matches before he was back in the mix, even as Mumbai Indians were bowing out in the group phase.
MI’s coaches would have you believe he was fine, but the fact he was being used as an Impact Player and not always putting in the full 20 overs in the field left people wondering. That’s why the BCCI had to step in and verify.
On the selection front
When the BCCI put together the side for Afghanistan in May, they put Rohit in the list but made it clear his spot was conditional. Having him report to the CoE was about making sure the call was an objective one.
Shubman Gill will be the one with the armband, with Shreyas Iyer by his side. Then you have the likes of Virat, KL and Hardik for the experienced heads, and young ones like Ishan Kishan or Washington Sundar. Up front in the pace department are Arshdeep and Prasidh, with Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar to back them up.
Afghanistan and beyond
Three games starting the 13th, and with Rohit in the mix, India’s batting is in order. The question is how the leg holds up under the strain of an ODI once the rehab is put behind him.
For the management, it makes for an easier job. For Rohit, it’s about making his point and holding onto his place at the top of the order.
