Tamil Nadu CM Vijay’s Delhi Visit: NITI Aayog Meeting and Key Political Engagements

Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay is in Delhi for three days, with the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting as the main event. It's a chance to put development and federal ties on the table and show just how much of a part he is playing in national policy.

Vijay will be in the capital from June 9th, and for good reason: a NITI Aayog session on the 11th that has some high-stakes implications. When you have cooperative federalism and development to discuss, it’s a test of how well the Centre and the state can work together, and of Vijay’s own standing in the room. It’s only his second time here since he was sworn in. His office has a full plate for him this week, in no small part because of the June 11th get-together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm – an occasion that has every chief minister in India making time for it. Put another way, this is the second official foray to the capital under his watch, and there is an early push to engage with the centre. You can expect a tight three-day run of it, with as many institutional talks as there are high-level calls to make.

What is on the table at NITI Aayog

The word from officials is that the Governing Council will be all about priorities and how the Union and the states can get in step. With chief ministers from across the country in one place, the forum is meant to be a way to smooth over any hiccups in implementation and make sure economic aims are in line. There is some other movement in the capital too. Andhra Pradesh’s N Chandrababu Naidu is set to be here for two days starting the 10th for the NDA and the NITI Aayog, per his office.

The week in New Delhi: moving pieces

You don’t have to look far beyond Tamil Nadu to see what’s in store. The city will be abuzz with political and policy doings, and with so many calendars in sync, the visiting leaders will be in for some back-to-back consultations. Here is what we know from the ground up: – Vijay in town from the 9th to the 12th – The NITI Aayog on the 11th – Naidu arriving on the 10th for a two-day stint – Some NDA meetings to go with it

Vijay’s Delhi schedule and travel plan

The plan is for a special plane to take him out of Chennai at about 8 am. Depending on how things go, he could be here until the 12th, with a flight back in the evening around 6:00 pm. The CMO has put down the highlights for the next few days: – NITI Aayog Governing Council (June 11) – A call on President Draupadi Murmu – Time with CP Radhakrishnan – A sit-down with Home Minister Amit Shah – Some words with top Congress men It’s going to be a lot to fit in. In a short span, the CM has to cover policy, the formalities, and a bit of political outreach.

A look back at the last time in Delhi

Back on May 27, he had a quick in-and-out with PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman before heading home. He didn’t see the Home Minister or any of the senior Congress then; this week is different. That kind of broadening of the net is what you see in this trip. There are more stakeholders to talk to, and the itinerary is built to give him more of those moments around the NITI Aayog.

Centre-state coordination lens

Cooperative federalism is the name of the game this week. For the chief ministers, it is an opportunity to put their concerns on the record and see where they and the Union stand. These kinds of face-to-faces often set the pace for what happens with a policy, even if there isn’t a big headline to show for it. With so many meetings, the substance will likely be in the side conversations and what comes after.

What to watch next

All eyes will be on the readouts from the 11th and the calls that follow. We’ll be looking to see if the talk of coordination becomes something concrete for the states, and if the cross-party chit-chat leads to any open doors down the line. For now, the plan is simple: out of Chennai in the morning, the council on the 11th, and back by 6:00 pm on the 12th. In between, the corridors of power in Delhi will dictate the course of the CM’s visit.
