Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Approves 5 Shows Daily for New Films in First Week, Boosts Jana Nayagan

You can put your first-week watch party in the books, because Tamil Nadu has given moviegoers a new reason to head to the theatre. CM C Joseph Vijay has given the green light for five shows a day for any new Tamil film in its opening week. It's a call that should give the box office a lift and is sure to make for a strong start for Jana Nayagan, which you can already see on 19th June on the ticketing sites.

It comes down to a matter of timing. Lately, some in the industry and behind the counter have been asking the government to do something about Kollywood’s box office numbers, especially with so much money going to OTT. With this order, Vijay has made it easier for exhibitors in the state to get more screenings out without all the hassle.

How the rule works now

A press note from the CM’s X account puts it plainly: for the first seven days after a film is out, you can have up to five daily showings. That goes for the weekend and any public holiday or local festival, too.

In short, here is the new deal for those in the seats and those running the show:
– Five shows a day for the first week
– The same on local and public holidays
– And on Saturdays and Sundays as well
– No red tape for the fifth one

It’s a bit of a departure from what we had under the 1957 Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatres (Regulation) Rules. Back then, Condition 14-A put a hard cap of four on you per day, with one special exception for a holiday if the authorities said so.

The good news is you don’t have to go through the motions to get a fifth show in. Producers and theatre managers are no longer in the position of having to run to the Licensing Officer, the District Collector, or even the Commissioner of Police in Chennai to make it happen.

Don’t expect to be in the dark at the crack of dawn, though. The 9 AM start is still the earliest you’ll find. The ban on early and late-night showings for safety is still in place; the government has only tinkered with how many you can fit in, not when they can be.

Reactions from screens and seats

Those on the ground are calling it just in time. Rohini Silver Screens put out a word of thanks to the Chief Minister for the move, which allows for five shows on every new release for a full week, and on all the weekends and holidays that come with it, without the need for another G.O. or you need to make a special case for it.

The Jana Nayagan factor

Then there are the fans, who never miss a beat. They’ve already put two and two together and tied this to Vijay’s last time in front of the camera. Now that Jana Nayagan is on the docket for 19th June, you can hear the excitement on social media: “I’m in awe,” or “You’re going to put on a show for us, right…?!” Some are even putting their money on it to shatter records.

When the buzz is at its peak and word is getting around, five shows in the first week is where you want to be with a star vehicle. For a film of this calibre, that one more slot a day is what you need to go from sold out to turning people away, and keep the energy up.

It also puts an end to some old headaches like not knowing if you can book a late show. If there’s space for five, theatres can put their schedules to bed sooner and get ahead on ticket sales. It makes for a smoother opening weekend across the board.

How we got here

According to the press, the industry was in the CM’s office on 16th May 2026 to put in a few requests, chief among them being a five-show minimum for films in Tamil Nadu. The government has come through on that, making it official for when it counts most.

Exhibitors used to have to ask for permission for an extra showing. Not any more. For the first seven days out, as well as on weekends and holidays, the fifth show is now part of the rule. It’s less about discretion and more about knowing what you’re in for, which is good for the producer with his revenue numbers to work out as much as the theatre owner.

But the clock is still the boss

Some things don’t change. 9 AM is as early as you can go. No more midnight or pre-dawn slots. (Vijay made an exception for a 9 am Karuppu for Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, but that was within the rules as they stand.)

So for those in the planning room, you have to make the most of the hours you have. You can add a show, but you’re still looking at what works for families, for the 5 o’clock crowd, and for prime time.

Theatres will be reworking their opening week plans in no time, particularly for the ones with a line out the door. With the new leeway for the weekend and holidays, exhibitors don’t have to run around for approvals, and producers have a straighter path to the box office.

Looking ahead

Should the opening for Jana Nayagan be anything like the fans are hailing, you’ll see it in the numbers. The state has done its part. The rest is up to the filmmakers, the hype machine, and that all-important fifth show.
