Air India Group, on Monday, cancelled all flights going to and from Dubai because a drone had hit near Dubai International Airport, hitting a fuel tank close by and making a big fire begin. Though the fire was put out in a few hours, and no one was hurt, the airport had to stop working for a while and a number of airlines stopped their flights as a safety step.
Air India Stops Dubai Flights, Gives Passengers Options
The airline said on X – formerly Twitter – that all Air India and Air India Express flights to and from Dubai were cancelled for that day, after the airport closed. The airline also said that passengers whose flights were affected could book for another date, or cancel and get all their money back, without being charged more.
Air India also said its people were helping passengers who were stuck, and getting people home as soon as they were able to. Some planned and unplanned flights to other places in Western Asia will go on, if there is space and if it’s safe.
What Happened, and How the Airport Responded
Dubai Civil Defence and the people in charge of flying, confirmed that a drone had hit a tank that stores fuel near the airport. Firefighters got the fire under control in hours, and people in the government said not much damage was done to things around it.
The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority made the airport stop all flights for a time, as a safety step. Many flights coming in were sent to Al Maktoum International Airport and other airports nearby while people in charge looked at what was going on.
How Airlines are Reacting, and What This Means for the Area
Air India said that Air India Express flights that weren’t planned, to Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharjah, would still go on when they were told about, even though the Dubai flights were stopped. The group also said that planned flights to Jeddah and Muscat would go on as normal, showing that they were reacting to the problem in a way that put safety and getting things done first.
Other airlines also responded to the closing of the airport by stopping or pausing Dubai flights, and telling passengers not to go to the airport. The problems with flights add to the growing problems airlines are having with working, as they already have to deal with tighter security in the area because of bigger problems with politics.
What’s Going On: Trouble in Western Asia, and Risks to Important Places
The drone strike happened at a time when there is more fighting in Western Asia, where recent strikes and strikes in return have put places that are important for energy and transport in danger. People in government warn that places that are important to trade in the area, and energy going to other places, are being targeted more and more often.
People who study these things say events like this can make airspace rules temporary, make insurance for flights and things being sent more expensive, and make flights go a different way – which increases the cost of fuel and running things. Governments in the area are making security tighter, and telling people who live there to get their information from official sources while investigations go on.
What to Do if Your Travel Plans are Affected
Passengers whose flights were cancelled should look at what their airline is telling them, and official airport sources, for the newest information. Air India and Air India Express have made it possible to book flights again and get money back; Air India Express passengers can use the Tia digital helper on WhatsApp by typing #GulfCrisis to handle bookings.
Travellers are told not to go to Dubai International Airport until people in charge say that flights have started again. If flights are sent somewhere else, passengers should watch their plans for connecting travel and make sure they have transport on the ground and a place to stay, before they go.
This event shows that travellers need to have plans that can change during times when the area is not stable, and to look at the things their travel insurance covers, that cover problems from security events. Airlines and airport authorities stressed that the safety of passengers is the most important thing, and more information will be given through official sources as things change.
