David Dhawan’s Emotional Tribute: ‘Every Parent Should Have a Son Like Varun’

You could have been in the room at the Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai trailer launch and still not miss what David Dhawan put on display for his son Varun. It was an open, unvarnished kind of praise that made for a fine moment. With the film set to hit screens on June 5, 2026, it's all about some good-natured comedy with a bit of soul behind it.

The talk in Mumbai in the wake of the launch had nothing to do with the gags or the glitz. What had people talking was David, a little teary, making the case that you can’t go wrong with a son like Varun. That is the story of the day as we head toward the 2026 release date.

A father-son moment that stole the show

David didn’t put on the filmmaker hat for this one. He put on the dad hat. “He has been a great son first, I would say… He is always there, standing by,” he let the reporters know, then went on to remember the times Varun was right there in the hospital with him.

There is some history to it. Back in 2022, a turn for the worse with his health – he has diabetes, after all – put David in the hospital for a week. Up on stage, that past made for a confession you could see in his throat, the kind of thing any parent gets.

He made sure to keep it real. “As an actor toh he is improving… Wo theek hai. But as a father… everybody should have a son like that.” He gave a nod to Rohit as well, giving both his boys their due for being there for him.

What the trailer has to say

Then there is the film itself. The trailer makes its point with a scene where Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur are in the middle of an accidental pregnancy come-out, and it all goes to pot. You have your misunderstandings, and of course, Varun is in the thick of it.

Put the joke aside and you have a tale of romance and duty. Varun is Jass, and he is treading water in a marriage with Bani (Mrunal) when he runs into Preet (Pooja). It is a triangle that puts his priorities to the test.

Cast, makers, and what to expect in theatres

This is number four for the Dhawans and it is made for the family crowd that wants to be tickled but also to feel something. Rounding out the cast are some old favourites for comic relief: Rakesh Bedi, Chunky Panday, Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Rajesh Kumar and Ali Asgar.

With Ramesh Taurani of Tips and Gaurav Bose from Maximilian Films behind it, the movie is meant to be a no-brainer for the big screen. We will see if the jokes have the heart to back them up.

Some things to put in your calendar:
– Trailer came out of Mumbai
– In theatres June 5, 2026
– A fourth time around for David and Varun
– A co-production with Tips and Maximilian
– Some of the best in the business for laughs

Why it made waves online

People were quick to chime in with some good will. It was a nice way to put a face on Varun’s no-nonsense side, thanks to his father putting it out there. It was a change of pace from the normal fanfare of a new trailer.

It gives the film a different spin, too. Sure, a rom-com needs chemistry, but you have a director who has his son’s back and a son who has earned it. You can’t put that in a script, and it may be the one thing in the film’s favour.
