Suriya is definitely in “mass” mode, and the Karuppu trailer makes it obvious why people are so excited. Filled with the craziness of a courtroom, people doing their own justice, and Suriya looking incredibly cool, this latest look at the film sets up a very action-filled social drama with Suriya and Trisha Krishnan as the leads. The people who made the film put it online on Sunday, and it’s coming to theatres next week.
Why the Karuppu trailer is buzzing
Fans have already decided they’ll like it. One person online said Suriya looks amazing in the trailer, is his coolest and most “mass” self recently, and is completely filling the screen with how he looks and acts, like a firework.
Another said “the best thing ever is coming.” Suriya’s fans have been waiting for this kind of action. A third simply said, “I have chills!” The trailer’s energy comes from Sai Abhyankkar’s upbeat music and the way the music builds up to exciting moments.
A justice fight that starts in court
The trailer starts right in the middle of frustration with the law, with hundreds of lawyers shouting, “We want justice!” Trisha is shown as a lawyer trying to control RJ Balaji’s “Baby” Kannan, a lawyer who likes to show his power more than actually schedule court dates.
At the same time, a young girl and her dad keep trying to get their case heard, but it’s delayed again and again. Kannan doesn’t show up for court, and when they complain, he mocks them and says no other lawyer will take their case. We also see an elderly man and his granddaughter being brought back to court repeatedly, and being treated with no respect.
That’s when Suriya’s Karuppu appears. He easily switches between fighting in the street and fighting in court, and promises to not let anyone get in the way of people getting a decision in their case. The story is simple but powerful: make the justice system move, however necessary.
Suriya’s dual shades and mass moments
The trailer ends with a lively, exciting rhythm as Suriya says, “This is for all my wonderful fans!” It’s a nod to the short preview released on his birthday last June, which suggested he’d be playing two roles and have a complicated personality.
One of these personalities, Saravanan, is a lawyer wearing white, is calm and collected, and admits he goes by another name. The other, dressed in black and holding a type of curved knife called an aruval or koduval, is intimidating. The earlier preview even had a quick reference to a moment in the movie Ghajini: Oru Maalai for longtime fans.
Here are three beats fans will replay on loop:
– Dual personas teased without spoiling twists
– A mass line tailored for first-day-first-show
– A score that spikes every punch
Who is behind Karuppu
RJ Balaji directed Karuppu, and this is the first time he’s worked with a huge star like Suriya. The people writing the story are Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, TS Gopi Krishnan and Karan Aravind Kumar. Dream Warrior Pictures is producing the film.
Suriya and Trisha are the main stars, and the supporting actors are Swasika, Indrans, Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam and Supreeth Reddy. RJ Balaji makes a short appearance. Anagha Maya Ravi is also in a significant role, and there are lots of people in the cast all ready for a lot of trouble and relief.
What to expect next
If this trailer is anything to go by, we can expect a lot of energetic scenes and parts of the movie before the break that people will clap at. The trailer suggests a story that starts with people not caring, and finishes with people being held responsible for their actions, with Suriya being both clever in court and furious in the streets.
The film is coming to cinemas next week and Karuppu looks like it will give fans exactly what they wanted: a really exciting and meaningful story.
