Lagaan Returns: Aamir Khan’s Classic Hits Theatres for 25th Anniversary with New Trailer

Lagaan is making its way back to the big screen for 25 years of the film, and with it comes a new trailer and a re-release over three days. It's Aamir Khan at his most iconic - a mix of sport, some politics and good music - and we're asking you to come be part of it. Get in on the #LagaanPosterChallenge and mark the occasion with us.

It has been 25 years since Lagaan first made an impact, but now it is heading back to theatres with a bit of a bite. The re-release is set for June 12, 13 and 14, 2026. Whether you are an Aamir fan in need of some old-timey cinema or a younger type looking to see what all the fuss was about, the stars have aligned.

You could tell from the moment the trailer was out. Social media lit up with it. ‘All-time best movie ever,’ said one. ‘Real Cinema Is Back,’ put in another. Then there was the one who put it best: ‘Couldnt watch Lagaan in 2001… Finally, it shall come true!’

Why the return is a big deal

This was never just a movie to be put on and forgotten. Lagaan put a different spin on what Indian cinema could do, mixing in the heart with the rest. It was no slouch at the 49th National Film Awards either, where it picked up eight, including for Best Popular Film.

Then there was the Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film – only the third from India to be so recognised. If you were there for the end of the film, you know it is still hard to top that kind of feeling in a stadium.

The when, where and how

We are talking a special three-day event in the theatre for 12th, 13th and 14th June 2026. The new trailer will take you back to 1893 to show you the fields, the colonial attitude and a village with a dream or two in cricket.

A few things to keep in mind if you are going:

– Re-releasing in theatres: 12, 13 & 14 June 2026

– A new look at the 1893 cricket match in the trailer

Some of the faces and tunes you will like to see again

You have Aamir as Bhuvan, of course, and Gracy Singh as Gauri with all her fire. Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne are there for the other side of the fence. And then you have the likes of Raghubir Yadav and Rajesh Vivek, or even Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Suhasini Mulay, who make the cast what it is.

And the team from the village? You will spot Yashpal Sharma, Akhilendra Mishra, Aditya Lakhia, Pradeep Rawat, Daya Shankar Pandey, Amin Hajee, Raj Zutshi, Shrivallabh Vyas and Javed Khan. It is a lot of talent on display.

Don’t get us started on A. R. Rahman’s work. The place will be humming with Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa, Radha Kaise Na Jale and O Rey Chhori. Not many soundtracks hold up like this one does.

In the company of Gadar

There is a bit of a story here. When Lagaan came out on June 15, 2001, it was the same day as Sunny Deol’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. They were both hits, and 2026 is the year they both turn 25. A nice little coincidence for any cinephile.

If you were in the house for those original runnings, this is some fine cinema karma. For those who weren’t, you can go see for yourself what a real phenomenon is like in a theatre.

Be part of it

Aamir Khan Productions has put out the #LagaanPosterChallenge for you to have some fun with the poster. If you are one of the chosen ones, the studio will have you at a screening with the people who made it.

Here is the way to do it:

– Put your own spin on the #LagaanPosterChallenge

– Top entries will be in for a private viewing with the cast

Bottom line

People are in the mood for a movie you can put on the calendar. Lagaan is back with a new clip and a short window to see it, and with the fans behind it, this isn’t just a memory. It is a win. Let’s play.
