In fact, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maruti Suzuki in FY26 made more cars than any other car maker in India. What’s more, the company states it is the only factory of Suzuki Motor Corporation anywhere in the world to reach this many cars.
Record output and why it matters
Hisashi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director and CEO, says it is unusual for any company to build this many cars in just one country. He says they’ve been able to keep people wanting to buy their cars because of a long-held approach to making vehicles and technologies that customers like.
Takeuchi feels this record is because of the trust the company has earned over the last forty-five years. He emphasized that Maruti Suzuki’s strong Indian base of workers, the companies that supply parts, and their dealers have allowed them to increase production steadily without sacrificing the quality of their vehicles.
What powered the milestone
Takeuchi explains that government help, including the introduction of GST 2.0, gave the market more confidence at a critical time. This boosted demand, and allowed Maruti Suzuki to produce a record number of cars throughout FY26.
Key developments at a glance:
– FY26 output reached 23.4 lakh units
– Only Indian PV maker at this scale, per SIAM
– Only SMC plant globally to hit this volume
– Output grew 11.66 percent over FY25
– Exports rose 34 percent to 447,000 vehicles
Top models and production mix
The Dzire, Fronx, Swift, Ertiga and Baleno were the most produced models. Each of these cars had over 2 lakh made in FY26 and were a large part of the total number of cars.
The Dzire was actually the best-selling car in India in FY26. Continued popularity of these models helped Maruti Suzuki to have enough of all types and prices of cars, both in India and for export.
Capacity today and expansion plans
Maruti Suzuki has factories in Gurugram, Manesar and Kharkhoda in Haryana, and in Hansalpur in Gujarat. These factories combined can currently make around releasing 24 lakh cars a year.
As part of their growth plans, the company has bought land for a fifth factory in the Khoraj Industrial Estate in Sanand, Gujarat. When this new factory is fully functioning, it’s expected to add 10 lakh cars to their yearly production.
Road to 40 lakh units per year
Because its parent company, Suzuki, wants to make India a central place for exporting cars, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to make about 40 lakh cars each year. Takeuchi says this shows how much Suzuki Motor Corporation believes in India’s economic growth, and in Maruti Suzuki’s ability to make cars for the whole world.
Industry backdrop and what comes next
The number of passenger vehicles sold in India has been going up, rising 8 percent from the year before to a record 4.7 million in FY26. This increase was helped by a reduction in GST in September 2025. Maruti Suzuki’s huge increase in production went along with this rise in demand.
Maruti Suzuki also sold 447,000 vehicles to other countries in FY26, a 34 percent increase from the year before. They now manufacture 17 different models, with over 650 variations for people in India and overseas, meaning they can take advantage of the current momentum in the market, and the extra capacity that’s coming.
